Zip up your digital audio: lossless MP3 players |
||||
![]() James Kim Senior editor |
Digital audio mavens who appreciate the highest-possible sound quality should investigate MP3 players that can play back lossless audio formats. Most players play uncompressed audio such as WAV or AIFF, but lossless formats are preferable since they compress file sizes by about 50 percent without sacrificing audio quality, unlike MP3, WMA, or other lossy formats. Lossless formats include FLAC, Apple Lossless, AAC Lossless (though there's no portable player support at this time), and WMA Lossless, which is currently supported by only Portable Media Center devices. Lossless files take up a lot of space and are generally used to archive music on a computer, but the following high-capacity players are compatible with at least one of the mentioned lossless formats.

| Review summary | The iPod Photo is a beautiful and versatile device with a new, affordable price. The 30GB version is a particularly good value at only $50 more than the audio-only 20GB version. | In the iPod Mini redux, Apple offers two capacity options and a more competitive pricing scheme--welcome improvements in an already fantastic player. | Eight months after its announcement, the Creative Zen PMC is finally here. Despite its bulk, the player is solid, but it's the Microsoft Portable Media Center software that deserves most of the praise. | Eight months after its announcement, the Creative Zen PMC is finally here.
