Digital darkroom: printers galore

By Lori Grunin (February 12, 2004)
Except for a fine-looking Microtek monitor, we haven't seen much in the way of LCDs at this year's show, but we have noticed a few noteworthy printers, from the Bluetooth-equipped ultraportable i80 from Canon to the well-connected PictureMate from Epson.

Specs
Canon i80 mobile printer
Canon i80 mobile printer
$299.99 February 2004 Letter-size or smaller inkjet prints; 4,800x1,200 maximum resolution; rated at 14ppm black, 10ppm color With an optional Bluetooth adapter ($79.99) and Automobile Power Unit ($89.99), this successor to the i70 is built to hit the road.
Canon i9900
Canon i9900
$499.99 May 2004 Super B (13x19) size or smaller inkjet prints; 4,800x2,400 maximum resolution; eight color primaries (CMYKCpMpRG); rated at 37 seconds for a 4x6, 16ppm black, 12ppm color; USB 2.0 and FireWire interface This replacement for the i9100 photo printer brings higher resolution and a broader color gamut to the graphics table. Canon claims that its prints have the same color saturation as slides and transparencies.
Epson PictureMate
Epson PictureMate
$199 May 2004 4x6- and 3.5x5-inch, six-color pigment inkjet prints; 5,700x1,440 maximum resolution; rated at about 2 minutes per print; approximately 29 cents per print If Epson is lucky, consumers will find the convenience of connecting to mass-storage devices (such as Zip, CD-R/RW, and thumb drives) sufficient compensation for its incredibly slow print speed.
HiTi Photo Printer 730PS
HiTi Photo Printer 730PS
$399 March 2004 Dye diffusion thermal transfer; 301x301 dpi resolution; maximum print size 6x8 inches; rated print speed of 45 seconds for a 4x6 Though nominally targeted at the professional, on-demand photographer, this photo printer looks like a reasonable alternative for consumers looking for a standalone unit that prints larger than the typical 4x6.
Microtek 997M
Microtek 997M
$799 February 2004 19-inch LCD Microtek's latest entry into the display market is a reasonably priced LCD with a Gretag-Macbeth Eye One calibrator that swivels into both portrait and landscape orientations.
Olympus P-10 Digital Photo Printer

Sony PictureStation DPP-EX50
Sony PictureStation DPP-EX50
