TVs
By David Katzmaier (March 8, 2005)
Unlike in previous years, when Sony spilled all of the year's TV beans at its line show, this year the pickings are relatively slim. The company is announcing only seven televisions, and no real breakthroughs are on tap. We expect to see lower-than-ever street prices when the Grand WEGA A10 series hits the market in June--we guess the entry-level 42-incher will sell for less than $2,000--but Sony isn't divulging prices yet. The two LCD-based flat-panel sets are similar to smaller PC-ready LCDs announced at CES in January. And anyone who's ever cursed the dearth of late-night programming during a midnight snack will appreciate the kitchen-friendly 9-inch LCD set with a built-in DVD player. Sorry, no new plasma- or CRT-based products were announced.

42-inch, 1,280x720-resolution LCD rear-projection HDTV With the entry-level 2005 Grand WEGA, Sony redesigned the cabinet to fit better in entertainment centers, placing the speakers below the screen. Supposedly, the 14-inch-deep cabinet takes up as much space as a 36-inch CRT television.
