Web conferencing software
Updated December 14, 2005

If your start-up requires frequent one-on-one meetings, say, for brainstorming sessions, yet it lacks a sufficient travel budget, you might be wise to cancel those expensive plane and hotel reservations and invest instead in one of these online Web conferencing services. What you can expect from these services varies with the price, of course. The most affordable use conventional teleconferencing centers while presenting PowerPoint and shared desktop presentations via desktop PCs. The elite packages offer Voice over IP (VoIP), a whiteboard presentation space, IM chat, multiple-party video, quick polling, and the ability to record a meeting for later playback (useful for sales presentations and tutorials).

Review summary GoToMeeting is a first-rate basic Web conferencing program that's priced right for small to large businesses hoping to minimize travel costs. ASAP Pro 2.0 is an aggressively priced and well-designed conferencing program--not perfect, but a solid buy for cost-conscious small businesses. Live Meeting 2005, with its Office hooks, one-way VoIP audio, and improved PowerPoint features, is a big step up from its 2003 predecessor. But given its steep price, we'll take WebEx Meeting Center instead. Macromedia Breeze is great for Web meetings, and it's easy to install and use. But its high price makes it less appealing to small businesses, which should consider the more affordable Citrix GoToMeeting. Although it's difficult to master, WebEx Meeting Center's slick conferencing tools are an effective alternative to face-to-face conferences. Raindance Meeting Edition is fine for small meetings though it lacks some features, such as VoIP audio, found in pricier Web conferencing solutions, Raindance is still a solid, affordable package.
