Smart phones for on-the-go execs
Updated January 12, 2006

Business is growing, and so are the demands of your job. That's why the last thing you need is a clunky tech setup to slow you down as you travel from meeting to meeting. Smart phones combine the functionality of a cell phone and a PDA into one device so that you can work and stay connected to the office from the road. Plus, with the Bluetooth integration on some of today's newer cars, you can connect to your Bluetooth-enabled device and enjoy hands-free operation as you drive to your destination.

Review summary The Nextel i930 by Motorola is a good choice for executives looking for a world phone that syncs seamlessly with Outlook--if you can live with the poor battery performance and the lack of Bluetooth. Though it has its shortcomings, the Palm Treo 650 offers solid performance and adds some key features to maintain its reign as smart-phone leader. The Palm Treo 700w brings Windows Mobile and a number of useful features, such as push e-mail and photo speed dial, to the much-beloved smart phone, but its heft and its washed-out screen has us giving the edge to the Treo 650. Cingular subscribers looking for on-the-go e-mail access in a slim, lightweight device will warm to the RIM BlackBerry 7100g--that is, if they're patient with the tricky keypad. Small, light, and powerful, the Samsung SCH-i730's high-speed data support and built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi make it an excellent choice for those who have to stay connected at all times, though the crippled Bluetooth support may spoil the party for laptop road warriors. Aside from the tiny buttons and some e-mail issues, Audiovox's SMT5600 is a fantastic smart phone. Call quality is good, it's well constructed, and its display is magnificent.
