The top 10 games
With more than 20 games available at or close to launch day, the Xbox has a solid opening-day roster. Not surprisingly, a number of the titles are quite impressive, while others are best avoided. Here are the ones that we think are keepers.

10. NASCAR Thunder 2002 (EA Sports)
Forget all those jokes about people just turning left for 500 laps; NASCAR is finally getting some quality treatment in this fantastically detailed racing game. Create a driver and take on a 20-year career as you race on the grid with 42 other cars at the same time. Earn and lose sponsorships, hit the pits midrace, and pretend you're Cole Trickle from Days of Thunder. In short, if you're a fan of NASCAR, you'll love this game. If you're not, you'll still get a kick out of NASCAR Thunder 2002. It is also available for the PS2, but this version takes pole position.

![]() | 9. Fuzion Frenzy (Microsoft)
Think of this as a board game for a couple of buddies to play at once. Compete against up to four people (or the computer if nobody's around) in 45 different minigames. Many of the minigames are simple but addictive. This is also a good choice if you have kids around the house to do battle with.

8. Mad Dash Racing (Eidos)
There are plenty of car-racing games available, but what about a footrace? Well, Mad Dash Racing casts you as one of nine snarky animated characters and has you sprinting, climbing, and swimming through large obstacle courses. Overall, it seems a like an interesting new take on old games such as Mario Kart for the Nintendo 64.

If there is any one type of game that is a must-own, it's hockey. But this isn't your average puck-shooting masterpiece--unless you normally see pucks catch on fire. This four-on-four, beat-'em-up (sounds kind of redundant) version of hockey is sharp and a blast to play. If you're looking for a true hockey game, EA Sports' fantastic NHL 2002 will be available before Christmas.

6. Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding (Microsoft)
Rather than racing down some fantasy slope, Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding has miles of real mountain terrain that's been carefully mapped. You're free to cruise the entire mountain and pull off any number of tricks. Race if you want, but the real fun is busting out crazy stunts in front of photographers. With hours of pumping music in the background and beautiful scenery, this is one to check out.
