In the months since E3 2005, there's been a flurry of information and speculation surrounding the big three next-generation game consoles: Microsoft's Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3, and Nintendo's Revolution. Which machine will reign supreme? The Xbox 360 boasts an intriguing array of Media Center features, while the PlayStation 3 appears to have the edge in raw processing power. But the Revolution's trump card--downloadable access to Nintendo's entire back catalog of N64, SNES, and NES games--may prove just as strong an incentive for gamers on the lookout for their next console purchase. We've updated our coverage to separate the facts from the rumor and hearsay; read our First Takes to see where each next-gen game console stands.

Review summary With its extensive digital media features, a superior online service, and an excellent game library, the Xbox 360 remains the game console to beat. The high-end Sony PlayStation 3's larger hard drive and ability to play PS2 games makes it a worthwhile alternative to the cheaper model--so long as you're willing to wait several months for the more promising exclusive titles to hit store shelves. If backward compatibility is your top priority, this hard-to-find model may be worth the search. It lacks the graphical prowess and rich media features of the Xbox 360 and the PS3, but the Nintendo Wii's combination of unique motion-sensitive controllers and emphasis on fun gameplay make the ultra-affordable console hard to resist.
