You're already online--that much is obvious. But if you're like the rest of us, the grass always seems greener on the other dial-up line. Maybe it actually is. If your Internet service provider can't keep up, or if it's too slow or expensive, it may be time to leap over the fence into new pastures.

But where should you turn? If you want to stick with a local ISP, check out CNET's ISP comparison service, where you can sift through the hundreds of ISPs in your area.

To go with a nationally known quantity, however, read on. We test-drove five of the largest national ISPs operating in the United States--America Online, AT&T WorldNet, CompuServe, EarthLink, and MSN Internet Access--to find out which provided the best balance of dial-up connections, customer service, useful features, and an all-around pleasant experience.
