It's getting harder to hitch a free ride on the information superhighway. Free ISPs are dropping like flies, and it's darn near impossible to find Internet access for less than $10 per month.

Interestingly enough, although Internet use is going up steadily, Nielsen/NetRatings reports that most users spend an average of only 16 hours per month online. So why should you spend $20 per month for unlimited Net access just to check e-mail, get stock prices, or send an instant message once in a while? Sure, most cheap ISPs limit the time you spend online and force you to look at banner ads, but if you're getting something for next to nothing, you can expect to put up with a few inconveniences.

We tested four of the most popular low-cost dial-up ISPs in the United States. Find out which one delivers maximum service with minimum hassle.
