With so much hype, buildup, posturing, and politics, we're frankly surprised that the AOL vs. MSN knockdown won't be televised on pay-per-view.

When Microsoft today launched version 8.0 of its MSN browser, portal, and ISP package, AOL attempted to preempt the party by announcing a few days earlier that it would rid itself of pop-ups (well, third-party pop-ups, anyway). But even as AOL bragged that 5 million users had downloaded its new 8.0 version before MSN had even launched, Microsoft commissioned a study that found customers prefer MSN over AOL and announced that MSN, too, would ditch all pop-ups, effective immediately.

All these antics are the tech-world equivalent of knee-biting weigh-ins, and as far as we're concerned, it's about time these two got in the ring together. We've squared off the behemoths in a review royale. Read on for our winner.
