How to burn TV shows to DVD
Products needed: TV tuner card (with included recording software), cable signal, computer, DVD media, DVD burner (with included burning software).
Storing recorded TV shows on your computer is great but the video files take up a ton of drive space. Today, we'll show you how to back those shows up to DVD so that you can build up a library without running short of room on your PC.
Step 1: Inserting the blank DVD media
You'll need to buy a spindle of DVD media that's compatible with your computer's DVD burner. Open your PC's DVD burner drive, select one blank writable DVD, and insert your media into the open slot or tray. Then close the tray so that your computer can read the blank disc.
Step 2: Opening the DVD-burning software
The next step is to open up the burning program, which will let you back up your videos to DVD. In some cases, Windows will recognize that you've inserted a blank disc and offer to open this program for you. But if this doesn't happen, you'll need to open the start menu, select the programs tab, and look for the program group containing your DVD burning software. It's possible that your burner has its own unique software, so you may need to check your manual to find out which specific program allows you to burn DVDs.
Step 3: Starting a new disc
Now, you'll need to open the file menu and create a new DVD project. When your program asks you what type of media you're planning to burn, select Video. The program will open up a new file window, which represents the files that will be backed up onto your blank DVD.
Step 4: Select your show
Somewhere on your screen, you'll see a window that's called something along the lines of File Browser. That's where you can search your computer for the video files you'd like to burn. Navigate to the directory on your PC where your video files are saved. Once you're there, select the files you want to back up and drag them over to the New DVD window that you created earlier. Make sure that you don't copy too many files because the DVD won't burn if your shows exceed its maximum capacity.
Step 5: Burn the DVD
We're ready to burn a DVD! On your program's top menu bar, look for the button that starts the DVD-writing process. The software will check to make sure everything fits, then the burning will begin. Depending on the speed of your writable DVD drive, this process can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.
Step 6: Remove your DVD
Once the process is done, your new DVD should eject automatically. Remove your DVD media, and enjoy watching the TV shows that you've burned!
