Control your TV with a DVR

The brand name TiVo has become synonymous with digital video recording, but it is just one of the ways that you can take control of standard TV, high-definition programming, and even those old home movies. We show you how.

Why you should take control of your TV.

What the editors say
1

Watch TV when you want

Love those Desperate Housewives? You can automatically record all new episodes whenever they air. Want to record any TV show or movie involving George Clooney? Just tell your DVR. You can even pause live TV so that you won't miss overtime if Mom calls.

2

Skip commercials

You won't catch TiVo touting this feature, but nearly all DVRs and DVD recorders give you some ability to fast-forward through or outright skip ads--whether it's documented or not. You can blast through an episode of 24 in about 40 minutes (so much for real time). Once you get used to it, watching TV with commercials becomes virtually unbearable.

3

Take it to go

Digital video recorders now let you share recorded TV, music, and photos over a home network and even transfer recorded shows to a PC or DVD to bring on the road. It's the digital dream--your content anywhere, anytime.
