Showing that it's in top form early on, the Palm-powered Samsung i500 trounced the Nokia 3595 with a strong all-around game that left the underdog Nokia looking overwhelmed. The next round should be tougher for the i500, where a potential matchup with the LG VX6000 looms.

THE FANS SOUND OFF:

• No contest. It was over before it started. It's the Lakers playing against the University of Montana boys' basketball team.

• When it comes down to it, Nokias, no matter what, are pretty dated. They're the same phones, with the same features, just different physical appearances. Samsung won this battle hands-down.

• Who set up this match? This is like pitting Mike Tyson in the ring against Howard Stern. And the results are all too predictable! 

• My partner has the i500, which he determined to be the best smart phone after going through all the Pocket PC and BlackBerry devices. Tellingly, Palm smart phones finally do Outlook well.

• Are you kidding me? Might as well have Kentucky vs. Lehigh. The powerful i500 is going to trounce that funny-looking Finnish phone.

• There's no doubt that the i500 will take this round, but someone has to stick up for the little guy here. The Nokia 3595 is a phone for the practical-minded. It's relatively compact, wonderfully simple, and cheap. It'll do what it's supposed to do. It's the phone of the people!

• I've owned the 3595 for about five to six months. It's pretty good overall, with a nice color screen and decent battery life. The only downsides: sometimes, the phone turns off on its own and has problems with the SIM card (but very rarely). 

• It's like comparing a Chevy Cavalier with a BMW 330i. One phone has nothing to do with the other one.

• Both the Samsung i500 and the Nokia 3595 are absolutely dismal in terms of aesthetics, but the Samsung i500 is the clear winner in terms of features and functionality. The Nokia 3595 (as well as most other Nokia phones) uses that annoying system of keys that are stuck together and that I absolutely detest. It's like putting square wheels on my car.

• The i500 is a lemon. The 3595 is a monster and a workhorse. I've seen them dropped on concrete and in water and take tons of abuse. The i500 couldn't take the pounding a 3595 could, not to mention it could never match the battery life.
