EDITORS' RECAP
Sanyo's been a Cinderella in the tournament in years past, but this year, the multifaceted, stylin' Sony Ericsson T616 proved too high a hurdle for the 8100 to overcome. Can you say "blowout"?
THE FANS SOUND OFF:
• It's late in the game, and it looks like the odds are stacked against the Sanyo 8100, but I can't help but toot for it. It's a great phone that can take a lot of abuse. It has fantastic reception. It works well at its primary function: sending and receiving calls. Add to that the extras and you've got a phone to keep.--Rico, San Francisco Bay Area • The Sony Ericsson T616 is sexy, suave, and stylish. The Sanyo 8100 has um...yeah. • The Sanyo has a nice form, but on the open court (or when you open it), it's still a brick!!! • Yeah, OK, the T616 looks great on paper, but come on, Joni, that's a marketing PR move you got there! Ever try to actually USE Bluetooth? I'd rather see my dentist, that's easier!! Ha ha ha!--Joe, Denver • The Sanyo doesn't have Bluetooth, a must in a cell phone, a PDA, or pretty much any other computing device. Bluetooth is like TiVo: If you don't know you need it, you've never had it. Frankly, both have a camera, and that alone means I MUST PASS on these. As a consultant, I rely on my cell phone, and too many of my clients won't allow phones with cameras into their facilities. If I can't take my cell phone in the door it's a nonstarter.--David, Sunnyvale, CA • My T616 is tough, baby--sexy looks, camera, syncs with Outlook. The T616 with contract: $149. It will take Bluetooth to beat Bluetooth. Who's next? • The Sony T616 was at one time a great phone for a young hipster copywriter like me. The 8100 is just another flip phone. I feel that flip phones are waaaaaay too mainstream now! Everyone and their dog has one. But who am I to say?! I now use a Sony S700, which is a phone and the kitchen sink!--Nandofumi, London, England • Both my kids have, and adore, the 8100--great features and usually can be had for a great price.--Ben, Chevy Chase, MD • The Sony Ericsson T616 vs. the Sanyo is like comparing fine wine to beer. It's exquisite vs. ordinary and a matter of taste. The Sanyo has all the bells and whistles, and it's definitely overstated in the looks of the phone. It says, "LOOK AT ME!" The T616 is simply stated, and the attention is drawn to its design. The features are hidden inside its small frame. Once you hold it, there's no going back. It goes unnoticed in your jeans or suit.--John, Watchung, NJ • Solo lo mejor. Sony Ericsson T616 galardonado como el celular del aņo 2003 por la organizacion GSM. (Just the best. Sony Ericsson T616 awarded as the best phone of 2003 by the GSM Organization).--Roberto Romero, Colombia
