Except for the BlackBerry 7230, which got bounced by the Siemens SL56, the brawnier smart models have dominated in the first round. Samsung's i600, rumored to be Bill Gates's tournament pick, put the kibosh on the Nokia's "butterfly" system with a methodical, businesslike performance.

THE FANS SOUND OFF:

• The Samsung i600 might have a good chance at the Final Four if it can get around the smooth look and style of the Nokia 6800. Nokia has come up with some great moves over the years and is constantly a contender for the Big One. I think this is the year to do it.

• This matchup is just as unfair as the Treo 600 vs. the Samsung A530. You can't match apples to oranges. The tournament should be divided into two categories: smart phones pairing up against other smart phones, and cell phones pairing up against other cell phones. Yes, even in real life, there are a ton of unfair matchups, but maybe this little comment can alter how the contest will be conducted next time.--Alan V., Burlingame, CA

• Proprietary closed OS vs. Microsoft's Windows Mobile Operating system with numerous third-party apps--no contest. The Samsung advances to the next round.

• I have a more advanced version of Nokia 6800, the Nokia 6820, and it has everything that 6800 has but with a built-in camera. Anyway, I think Microsoft and Sony's OSs are too slow compared to Nokia's. Having a fast OS for the phone is really important after the user has become familiar with the phone. And personally, I think CNET is missing this factor in its evaluation.--Matthew, Ithaca, NY

• In this case, the Samsung pulls ahead with its more desirable form factor and Windows Mobile OS. The Nokia comes in a close second, though, with its strong feature set and performance, as well as its brand reputation.

• Using your phone to answer pages or send e-mails on a more than occasional basis? The 6800 has the game, hands down. That keyboard, at night, is lit and functional, so there's no three-press boogie for me as I type C after C. Come on, you know you want one.

• This is no matchup. The 6800 is not even a smart phone--truly unfair. Instead, they should have the Nokia 3650 up against this Samsung model.--Nik, Chicago

• The Nokia clearly owns the i600 in style and design factors. However, the i600 bears a superior feature set and uses Windows Mobile. The i600 also seems more suitable for business and regular users. I believe that the i600 is substantially superior to the Nokia phone.

• The unique sleekness of the Samsung i600 is enough to justify the purchase. Samsung dominates with the A500. This phone continues the tradition.--Jason, New York

• This is just like the previous matchup of the Nokia and the Samsung i500, but this time, the Nokia has a bit more. The fold-out keyboard makes text and e-mails a snap. But the Samsung has the smart-phone features. Watch out for an upset by the Nokia.--Randy, Frederick, MD
