Random notes from the Apple announcement
Posted by: James Kim

Three things we've come to expect from an Apple music event: a live performance, an iChat videoconference with a celebrity, and a stat- and graphic-filled PowerPoint, er, Keynote presentation by Steve Jobs. Today's Rokr event featured two songs by Kanye West (to a sober audience of journalists and geeks, which also included Yo-Yo Ma), a videoconference with a London-based Madonna, and the following statistics:

  • 22 million iPods have been sold worldwide (from the iPod's introduction to the end of June 2005)
  • 6.2 million were sold worldwide in the June 2005 quarter alone
  • 2 million Sony PSPs were sold in the same quarter
  • The iPod franchise has 74 percent of the market share in the United States for all MP3 players
  • There are more than 1,000 accessories for the iPod
  • iPod connectivity as an option was introduced in the Honda, the Acura, the Audi, and the Volkswagen
  • 30 percent of cars in the United States will have an iPod option in 2006
  • The iPod Mini is the most popular MP3 player in the world (in terms of players sold)
  • The iPod Nano is thinner than a No. 2 pencil
  • It's also 80 percent smaller than the original iPod
  • And 62 percent smaller than the iPod Mini
  • And 69 percent smaller than the Creative Zen Micro
  • And 58 percent smaller than the Creative Zen Neon
  • And 67 percent smaller than the Sony NW-HD5
  • And 66 percent smaller than the Motorola Razr
  • The iTunes Music Store has sold half a billion songs to date
  • It currently sells 1.8 million songs a day
  • It has an 82 percent market share for downloads in the United States
  • There are iTunes Music Stores in 20 countries
  • There are 7 million podcast subscriptions to date
  • There are 15,000 podcasts in the iTunes directory and a thousand new ones added each week
  • iTunes now has 2 million songs
  • The iTunes Music Store has 10 million accounts
  • The average number of songs downloaded by a user is 60

WMA is the problem... lack of!!

If you don't have WMA support, than your player is garbage. If you feel the need to put a color screen on a music player... than your player is garbage. If you think downsizing the storage capacity of your mid range player is good, than your player is crappy. If you can't even intergrate FM radio, or voice recorder functions in your player... Than you and your player are crappy.

iPod is all hype, all fancy looks... no function and no brain power. Try doing research before buying a player.

    "Renting" music

I'm not ashamed to say it...I'd like the choice of paying a small monthly fee to access a wide selection of music, or pay $1 to "own" the song.

I can buy a movie or a TV show to keep forever, but most of the time I just want to watch it. So I "rent" it (through my monthly cable subscription of dozens of channels), with the option of going out and buying an individual movie/show on DVD at a later date.

I think there's a market for both models. In fact, I use both now. Steve can continue to ignore subscription services (just as he's ignored other trends and consumer demands), but it just pushes folks like me into the arms of competitors who provide what I want.

iPod shmyPod what about the phone.

I bought my wife an iPod min last year. I would use it more often except it’s pink. But I keep putting off getting my own because I’m tired of carry around so much krapp. Now I’m betting a lot of people feel the same why which is why PDAs sales are down. What I want is a cell phone/MP3 player/2 mg camera phone/address book/appointment calendar that will sync to my Mac. Now the Rokr is getting there, but why only Cingual? I have a great deal with Verizon for DSL, local, long distance, and wireless. Hopefully Verizon will have access to that or the next model when my contract is up in 06. Apple is in a position to dominate the cell phone industry if they would just put work in to creating the one and only device you have to carry.

    WHY?WHY?WHY?

why is it that you guys always complain that iTunes does not have a
subscription service? who wants to rent their music? stop
promoting the ignorance that is subscription. Personally I think that
you people agree with what I just said but need to find a flaw in
perfect things just to complain about something.
