Creative Zen Vision:M--a second look

Before the upcoming full review, of course (here's our First Look). Our black one scratches a bit, though nowhere as much as the iPod--we recommend a nonblack model for scratch haters. The screen is outstandingly bright and colorful, as well as lovely from all viewing angles. Photos pop off the screen, and video is plentiful on our Media Center box; plus, Starz Vongo and others are coming. We're fond of the snappy performance and the excellent new touch pad, but we're sour when it comes to the USB/power/line-out adapter. Additional observations:

  • Headphones are OK (standard Creative)--you should definitely substitute these.
  • Screen completely darkens only when the device is in hold mode. If not in hold (and we think this is cool), the LCD dims when not in use.
  • Controller buttons can be a tad stiff for some; we think they will wear in nicely.
  • The thin buttons encrusted on the sides of the touch pad are brilliant, providing tactile control with little space.
  • Using in a sea of iPodders on the San Francisco Muni: refreshing and original.
  • Works near flawlessly with subscription services and Windows Media Player; will be a nice fit for upcoming Windows Media Player 11.
  • Solid-feeling in the hand, but it's nothing like the silver-backed 30GB iPod; it also transports well.
  • Would love Audible support--and why not OGG?
  • Recorder is good and useful.
  • Replaceable battery would have closed the deal for many.
  • Sound is nice. We've heard reports otherwise, but we're pretty impressed.
  • Custom key is great. We use it for volume, but we wish it could take us to EQ.
  • Software available for warping photographs and having them pulsate to the beat of a song.
  • Carrying case is kind of a joke (so is Apple's, but this one gets more style points).

Come back for more. In the meantime, discuss your experiences with the Zen Vision:M, which we think (obviously) is a significant entry into the market.

    cases

i agree. i think the appeal of ipod is also because of the wide range of accessories available in the market. especially for zen vision m, i think it's still limited. so far,the cases i've seen are from boxwave and tangochocolat.

    GREAT UPDATE ON CREATIVE

So if you have read my other postings I was not very nice about creative's cust. support or their products quality. Well I have some great news. I finally after months of going back and forth with creative did I finally get some results. I ended up getting a live perosn on the phone who was very personable and knowlegable about their products as well as other companies products. He got me in touch with a supervisor who reviewed all the info at hand and all the back and forth e-mails over the past two years. I ended up getting Creative to replace my bettery. I did however have to pay for it, BUT... I didn not have to pay the $80 fee. So this just goes to show if you are honest and actually keep ontop of things and basically be the speaky wheel you will get results you can be satisfied with. This whole thing earned Creative a few points in my book, however I know that they are still many issues to be dealt with with other customers. Keep on it and dont give up!!!!

    Yea

That's what they do. I am fairly certain that they will engrave it for you again. But it says on the website that they will either replace the battery or give you a refurbished one. It might be like the way nintendo does it. Nintendo told me I could get a reburbished micro (my d pad broke) so it will get to me sooner or I can just have them repair it which would take more time. So maybe this is the way apple does it. I don't know I haven't needed a battery replacement and niether have any of my friends. Of course how do you think Creative will do it. Most likely the same way Apple does.

    What??????

Apples battery replacement is 65 dollars that includes tax and shipping. You just send it it. They do the rplacement and charge you 65 bucks. That's if your warrenty is up. If you still have a warrenty then it is free

    To the bashers:

Yes, it had an "iPod wannabe interface" but thats only because people believe electrostatic touchpads are Apple's intellectual property: they've been around a lot longer than the iPod though. As far as the "I only want mp3, why get the player with extra features?" point goes, why get an iPod video either? Truth is I won't be buying either device cause they're too fragile for me (I have a tendency to put players through all sorts of unforseen abuse, and no harddrive can take what I've dished out) but I'm not going off and saying the iPod or any other player is miserable because its not what I'm looking for. If I were in the market, I would choose the Creative hands down for battery life and supported formats. Plus, you don't have to use DRM with Creative players, and the iPod is just too ubiquitus for my liking

Oh yeah... Creative had produced not one but two PVPs before the iPod video came out, and so had several other companies. Even then its not origanallity that matters, its best implementation or focusing on a different demographic.

    getting mp3s into auto

What is the best sounding way to get your mp3 library into your car? Is there a better way than I pod?

    Video question

As a novice, it has been both enlightening and somewhat distracting to read all of these battling emails on Ipod vs. Creative Zen. So I would like some help answering a serious question, I will primarily use this to replay movies -- I travel extensively and I am tired of carrying my PDVD player and all the disks, so this is my main purpose for purchasing either the ipod or the Vision M. I gather that Zen has a better visual and I understand that I will have to also purchase a software package to convert my current DVDs to an MP3 player, so with a nod towards those Apple devotees, am I correct in saying that the Zen is superior in video playback and what software do you recommend to do the transferring of DVDs to the player. Finally, will the battery life be affected by my use being primarily that of video rather than music playback (without restarting the argument on the replaceable battery issue). Thanks for helping me to clarify.
