More touch-screen iPod fodder
Posted by: James Kim

The fifth-generation iPod has come to be known as the "video iPod"; the much ballyhooed sixth-gen iPod, which is pretty much a figment of our collective imagination, is referred to as the "touch-screen iPod." Check out the latest alleged Apple patent drawings of the touch-screen interface, which may be used for an upcoming iPod as well as for a tablet computer.

Handycam and now iPod?

First the Sony Handycam and now some think the iPod will be degraded by a touch screen? It would be the worst thing apple has ever done!

a touch screen ipod goes against all intuition

think about it for 2 seconds. everyone is so hyped-up about this supposed "touch-screen" vPod. but i know that i definitly would not want to look around my hand to see what is on the screen and i can only begin to imagine how poor of an expirence it would be to try and watch a movie or scroll through the menus with all the scratches and smudges that would be sure to accumulate after touching the screen. It fights the simplicity and ease of use that Apple is famous for.

Rumoured specs from ThinkSecret.

Those that were bashing the so called iPMP or vPod or however you want to label it, should think twice. While the validity of these specs are to be questioned, if it is true, then Creative and Archos will have their hands full.

• Display is a widescreen-type LCD with a resolution of 480 x 272, 16M colors
• 2 capacities will be available - 40gb ($ 449) and 80gb ($ 599)
• Plays h.264, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 videos up to DVD (720x480) resolution
• Video output quality is greatly improved over the iPod
• Has an IR port compatible with the Apple Remote that ships with iMacs
• Battery life will be around 5-6 hours for video, 18-20 hours for audio (screen off)
• Main menu will be much like Apple's Front Row application
• Comes with a full version of Quicktime Pro for making and converting videos
• Comes with an AC adapter & basic video cable
• A dock and upgraded video cables will be available as accessories
• Does not have line-in video recording capability

OLED.... not for me...

Before purchasing an iPod nano, I had tried the Creative Zen Micro Photo - which has an OLED display. The display is fine indoor, and the colors were great - BUT OUTDOORS was a whole different story, the sunlight washed out the screen - I couldn't see anything, even when I turned so the sun was behind the Zen.

I prefer the reflective color display - I haven't seen anything yet that works better indoors and outdoors.

that looks friggin sweet(pros/cons of touchscreen)

I was just about to say that the only advantage of having a touch screen besides looking cool would be increased screen size, but that pic confirms it. 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, virtual scroll wheel, all they need is a small stand in the back to prop it up.

I'd like to comment that if they are gonna make the screen so large and have a widescreen layout, they should make this a dedicated PVP with music playback capabilities rather than a music player that happens to play video, like the 5g ipod. If it's not a dedicated PVP, why bother with the large screen? If they do make it a dedicated PVP, that means: 1. They HAVE to make the battery life for video playback AT LEAST 4 hours (who wants a PVP that can't playback popular 3 hour movies like Lord of the Rings?) 2. They HAVE to make the screen MUCH MORE scratch resistant, especially if it's a touch screen and your finger's touching the screen all the time. Also, adding small speakers on the player itself besides the headphone jack might be a nice addition for a PVP. If this is the true design of the 6G ipod, case makers would have to get a lot more creative as the screen protector would have to cover the whole front face of the ipod, excluding the area where the virtual controls show up.

Of course, only time will tell if these rumors are even true about the 6G ipod.

Apple is smart

This is where ALL interfaces are going. In a decade all small devices will just be touch screen, transitioning from numberpads to ipod pads to full screen video. I've wanted to make a cell phone like this a long time, but I can keep dreaming, I'm a programmer, not a Motorola engineer. Doing this with Ipod was inevitable. And pretty soon everyone will use laptops, and they'll all have keyboards that images, too.

RE: Nuff said

I apologize too. Got lost in the name calling and all. Lets get back to the original topic...a rumored touchscreen iPod.

Which I think would be cool, though the ability of the screen to handle the "abuse" of constantly being touched, more so than is done currently, would be a big concern for me.

For now, I'll stick with my 30GB 5G.
