Toshiba's HD-A1 has HDMI issues

When we reported a few problems with an "HDMI error" in our Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player review, we were contacted by representatives of HDMI LLC, the licensing agent behind the High-Definition Multimedia Interface, who expressed concerns about the reports. We'd met previously with representatives from SimplayHD, a new HDMI testing subsidiary of HDMI chip maker Silicon Image, and we all agreed it would be a good idea to put the HD-A1 through their rigorous testing procedure.

A few days later, the rep from SimplayHD got back to us with the results, and they're not pretty. Apparently the Toshiba HD-A1's HDMI interface, which provides the highest video quality among the player's outputs, is much more susceptible to errors than any HDMI source should be. Specifically, numerous real-world scenarios can induce the "HDMI error" readout we saw on the Toshiba (always accompanied by a lack of any picture on the TV's screen), which sometimes necessitates either restarting the player completely or disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable, but always interrupts playback. Here's an excerpt:

The executive summary is that the Toshiba player appears to be able to handle only two of the many different allowed TV power-on/active states: 1) when TV is fully on with the HDMI input selected and fully active, 2) when HDMI signals effectively indicate the cable has been physically disconnected. The player goes into the Error state whenever it sees the TV's HDMI port in any other kind of standby or interrupted state, which unfortunately, are states seen in the majority of the TVs on the market.
In other words, you could get the error and possibly cause the player to crash by simply powering on the TV after the HD-DVD player, by switching inputs on the TV or on an HDMI switching A/V receiver connected to the TV, or even by powering on another piece of gear connected to the same switcher as the player. Of course, many HDMI displays and switchers operate differently, so they may not cause the error while others do.

It's possible that Toshiba will release a new firmware update for its HD-DVD players, which hopefully will address the issues and make its HDMI input less touchy. Of course, all of these problems are exacerbated by the fact that the player takes a minute or more to even turn on, so recovering from crashes is particularly tedious.

A big thanks to SimplayHD for sharing its test results with us.

I totally agree, I'd be doomed if bestbuy didn't

I totally agree, I'd be doomed if bestbuy didn't let me return the product. I might try the 800 dollars Toshiba HD-DVD player. I hope all problems will be fixed on that one.

One cable isn't too hard to plug into a T.V.

The problem only happens when we turn the unit back on when we open the store. So far we haven't had any problems when its on during store hours. And it doesnt happen every morning, just every once in a while.

Perhaps you've set it up wrong?

I just purchased a new Toshiba X A1...and since these are internally the same unit..I can tell you,I've seen one of these players taken shut down..moved and reconnected to other sets..and operated quickly cycling thru different commands on the remote..starting and stopping the player..inserting HD DVD's and SD-DVD's without 1 HDMI error ...all of this in 1 of the larger stores...so do I think this story might be a little 1 sided...truth be told..YUP..The fact is retailers around me can't keep them on the shelves...once folks actually see how good they do on a 1080p display...and where they can find them they can have them now instead of waiting...

    hd-dvd player article

Why are you guys talking about other products?
this article is about the Toshiba' HD player, they're not being biased or anything, they're doing a report on a new item.

I support their findings 100% because I work at a well known retail store (wont say the name) and our HD-A1 player gets that darn error all the time, we've tried turning it on/off and pushing play and nothing. Their demo is just wrong. They show a "simulated" picture for DVDs and they make it more fuzzy then it should be...by a lot.

Facts wrong - What a hatchet job

The writer has gotten several facts wrong that anyone who has used this player will recognize.

First, the "HDMI error" message is simply a status display - it does not crash the player! This is completely false information by the writer.

Second, you do not need to reboot the player to have HDMI handshaking re-attempted. Simply pressing Play will cause it to handshake.

If your TV display is off, the unit will display HDMI error to simply tell you the obvious.

Writing this report based on a phone "call back" from the friend at the test center, without any written information or fact-checking "smells" of a hatchet job.

If the report were factual I would have no problems, but this is a terrible injustice and very bad reporting that looks biased to the writer's preferred disc format and against HD DVD.

    Toshiba HDMI issues

I find this all rather amazing since there have been some issues with the players..but from the reviews I've seen not as great a problem as this report is implying. For everyone waiting on the Blue Ray players to show up..ask yourselves this.." What issues will I have on this brand new player ?"..By this time Toshiba should already have a firmware issued for both the A1 and the XA1 players, and more titles released for viewing.

    Not Just Toshiba

This a good article. But, you should do some checking on other equipment that use HDMI, you might be surprised at what you find with very little digging. I have a comcast/motorola DVR and a Sony TV and I can tell you one or both of them have some serious HDMI problems (probably more of an HDCP problem, since some DVI devices have the same problem). I just keep the DVR on all the time and this solves most of the issues. Sometimes I get no picture on HD channels and have to (I know this sounds strange) go play a previously recorded show for a few seconds, stop it and return to regular TV. Magically the HD channel pops up. I still cannot decide if it is the cable box or the TV.

In addition, after a year and half of my hdmi cable hanging out the back of the TV, the connection has become unstable. I sometimes get no picture and have to wiggle the connector going into the TV. Who came up with this crappy connector, the DVI connector is much more stable.

While Toshiba may have some HDMI/HDCP issues, I find it strange that this only gets reported now and is considered a Toshiba problem. Where were all the articles on other devices on the market?
