New French online music store Starzik will offer its downloads without any DRM. This store opens amid much anti-iTunes (and, in general, anti-DRM) sentiment in France, as well as a number of other European countries.
Much akin to eMusic (with a splash of allofmp3.com), Starzik will start with a catalog of more than 600,000 tracks from three major labels and scores of indies. Downloads will be available in MP3 (such as eMusic), Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, WMA, and AAC, giving users the choice and the ability to play purchased tracks on virtually any device. Tracks cost about 1 euro, while albums will be about 9 euro. Unlike Starzik, eMusic is a subscribe-to-own service: For $9.99 per month, you get 40 downloads, which is a considerable deal if you're into eMusic's indie-heavy catalog of more than 1 million songs.
