CPU chess match continues, Intel makes its move
Posted by: Rich Brown

AMD already dropped its CPU prices this week to give it some leverage against Intel's technologically superior Core 2 Duo chips. But with Core 2 Duo officially launching today, Intel follows with its own price move on its old Pentium D 900 series and other older dual-core chips. There are some drastic moves here, most notably the Pentium D 960, whose price was cut in half. It's still more expensive than the faster AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+, however (and the same as the Core 2 Duo E6600, which conceivably could beat them both).

AMD Old price New price
Athlon 64 FX-62 $999 $827
Athlon 64 X2 5000+ $649 $301
Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (65 watt) $561 $276
Athlon 64 X2 4600+ $522 $240
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ $389 $215
Athlon 64 X2 4200+ $339 $187
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (65 watt) $310 $176
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ $277 $152
Athlon 64 3800+ $246 $112
Athlon 64 3500+ $161 $91
Athlon 64 3200+ $130 $81

Intel Old price New price
Core 2 Duo X6800 $999 same
Core 2 Duo E6700 $530 same
Core 2 Duo E6600 $316 same
Core 2 Duo E6400 $224 same
Core 2 Duo E6300 $183 same
Pentium D 960 $605 $316
Pentium D 950 $316 $224
Pentium D 945 NA $163
Pentium D 940 $224 $183
Pentium D 930 $178 same
Pentium D 920 $178 same
Pentium D 915 $199 $133

The bottom line is that Core 2 Duo is having an obvious trickle-down effect. We hope the desktop vendors will pass on the savings, and we'll start to see some surprisingly powerful systems that are also cheap.

Price 2 Price comparision? No comparision here

If you read professional articles, like this one:
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2802

You can find sweet spots @Conroe $183 E6400 and $224 E6300.
Why? => The Conroe 65nm architecture is extremely good for overcooking. The article says it is very easy to overclock E6400 to 2.88 Ghz, E6300 to 2.59 Ghz!!! That means you buy a value CPU and you can get extreme performance by overclocking them. Just like article says:
"The E6300 and E6400 can easily overclock to E6700 and Core 2 Extreme X6800 levels, though the smaller cache does limit performance a bit. That being said, our overclocked E6300 was able to equal and in all cases but one outperform AMD's Athlon 64 FX-62. In fact, in quite a few benchmarks, the overclocked E6300 is essentially out of reach of anything AMD can offer with their current K8 designs. At $183, the value here is tremendous, and if you're willing to overclock the benefits don't get any clearer than that."

Sad for AMD, cheer for Intel. Intel has been underdog for 3 years. It finally comes back with knock out punch!

The only advantage AMD has is that the AMD mother board is cheaper than Intel's mb. How cheaper? $50 or $100 diff?
Dude, overclocked E6300 is faster than FX 62.

Just make sure to pick a GOOD CONROE mother board so that you can do overclocking!

How about a price-to-price comparison

How about a price-to-price performance comparison between the two makers?

Should I spend $183 on a Core 2 Duo, or am I better off with the AMD chip at the same pricepoint?

As you know, most users won't bother with buying the best chips out there, but many more will be in the $183 for a CPU range, for sure.
