It's time to reconsider Google

Ask
Ask gives you better search pages than Google.

Is it time to dump Google as your search engine? Lately I've been finding myself drifting away from my old friend. Newer services do just as much as--or more than--Google does, and they do it with nicer interfaces.

A few months ago, I started to look beyond Google for driving directions. Yahoo's Maps Beta, I found, gives you more control over the printed directions than Google does. Both Yahoo and Microsoft's Windows Live Local give you traffic. And Ask's Maps and Directions provides walking directions. So who needs Google?

I've also falling out of love with Google's Desktop Search. Again, Yahoo's Desktop Search is better. It seems to cause less of a drag on my laptop system, and the interface isn't a lame Web page; it has a proper preview pane, and it lets you easily narrow down and sort your search results.

But surely Google's primary consumer application, its Web search engine, is safe, right? Not so much. A recent visit from an Ask.com marketing contingent (not to mention Ask's massive TV advertising campaign) convinced me to give the engine formerly known as AskJeeves a new try. Here's what I found: Ask.com is really good. For popular search topics, where Google has ads down the right side of the page, Ask has a list of related links that give you either a narrower or a wider view. For example, search for Corvette, and under Narrow Your Search, you'll find links for parts and for cars for sale, while under Expand Your Search, there are links to other sports car marks. This is extremely useful. Ask can also pop up images of Web pages when you hover over a little icon near the results, as Browster and Cooliris (and some Google plug-ins) do. Ask will also put Smart Answers, short entries from a database or an online encyclopedia, at the top of your results, above the ads. Google does this, too, with some structured data items (such as shopping data, weather, and stock prices), but Ask does it with text topics as well.

I found Ask's search results different from Google's--often better, occasionally not. In particular, when searching for prices of consumer goods, Google's extra ads were very useful, and more often it found good prices to put in its Product Search box at the top of its results. But for nonproduct searches, I find that Ask's extra organizational features make searching more productive.

If you're devoted to Google out of force of habit or some affinity to the brand, I submit that it's time you reexamine your habits. Google is good, but it's not worth unyielding devotion.

I quote this article "A recent visit from an Ask.com marketing contingent (not to mention Ask's massive TV advertising campaign) convinced me to give the engine formerly known as AskJeeves a new try. Here's what I found: Ask.com is really good."

Hmmmmmmm..... sounds fishy.Wonder hom much they gave him.
That was so blatant it's amazing he had the nerve to think we would be so stupid.

Because Google is for teh l33t, not lowlands :P

I'll agree with you, under the condition that Yahoo's search engine is made for people who don't know how to properly navigate the web. Google is the best search engine for people who really use the Internet for all it's worth. You can scavange all sorts of information and reach every corner of the Interweb. Try that Yahoo! Maps, might be better on Yahoo, but that doesn't give the winning advantage to them. Is there a book on Google for dummies yet? I mean no disrepect, but Google is a very powerful tool that can be mastered, people just have to work for the information. pwnd. I love this site by the way, very nice reviews(Except for the recent DSLite vs PSP prize fight). Keep it up.

Try Windows Live Search

You should try Windows Live Search. It has Web, Images, News, Local, and new QnA which connects you to the best answers from the right people.

Google is still the best

At this time Google is still the best.
I do not own stock in that company. I am not a member of the Google family.
I have tested the others again and Google is still the best.

Here is why
(I am giving away big money on this one)

1. The program that takes in your request is so far ahead of all of the others that it reveals how far behind they are. When you honestly compare the results, it is apparent that the other programmers do not have the ability to construct an engine that can replicate a truly simulated human reply. The program actually asks you “do you mean ____.” The most amazing part of that equation is that it is a coherent relevant response, in regards to the customer QWERTY. The mere fact that it can most often correctly “guess” your actual intention is almost incomprehensible. In terms of business, it saves time and money, which in fact is the bottom line of all of this. In today’s society, we do not have time to waste on products that do not provide instant access to that which we need.

My Standby

I have used Mamma.Com for around 13 years and did not feel I needed anything else. Too simple? I think not. It's easy to use and accurate. I can always get maps elsewhere.

Try Jux2.com

I have found that Jux2 gives better results and lists the rankings for the various engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN).

Google Synonymous with Internet Search

See the problem now is that too much of the MySpace generation equates
internet search with the word "google." For example, Yahoo and Google both
offer better map services than Mapquest, but the vast majority of the public use
Mapquest for finding directions based strictly off brand-association. Google may
not be the best at everything, but everyone already thinks they are, and that
seems to be enough.

same search results almost, google is still better

Google hosts my email with gmail, my videos with google video, my photos with picasa, my calendar is organized with google calendar...i have to much integration with google in my life to switch of a moderate improvement in search quality.

A search engine would have to do something signifigant to get me to convert, and thats going to be tough because i love gmail.

I like this story!

First i would like to state that Google is the google of the internet. This means that Google is the standard. What make Google the best to ME at this point. Why, pure and simple Google by far has THEE very best search results. I have a created a Google theory! I will not share that "The "Game" is to be sold not told!" Google is the best because if you misspell a word you get the best results. If you compair searches you get the best results.

Now on to the story. I enjoyed the story and will test out Ask.com. This was the point of the story to take another look around to see if what was the "Case" is still case. When you create a story and fullfill the reason for the story you have done a very good job.

Good Job CNET (Great job Story writer)

P.S Cnet and ask your Female Reviews to go to the nail shop and to Wear somthing nicer to the office, they are on TV (internet TV) now.
