Disappearing songs and other iTunes 7 woes
Posted by: Jasmine France

iTunes 7 needs work.
iTunes 7 needs work.

iTunes 7 is so not ready for prime time. In fact, it's hard to believe Apple has released such a buggy program. On my Windows machine at work, I have been battling iTunes 7 nearly every time I use it. From its just refusing to start up after several tries to requiring me to select new libraries every third time I open it, this little jukebox and I have not been getting along. Most of my problems have been related to sluggish performance--that is, iTunes freezing up and acting slow in general. I noticed that while this is happening, my CPU usage shoots up as much as 80 percent. And that's not even playing music or video--that's just navigating around. This just shouldn't be happening on a 2.6GHz Pentium 4 with a gig of RAM.

OK, so that's annoying. But more disturbing is a recent phenomenon I've been noticing, which I shall call "the disappearing of purchased content" (DOPC?) issue. This has happened to me on not one, but two different PCs, running in different locations (home and work). Over the weekend, I purchased four songs on iTunes and used them to burn a mix with some music I already owned. When I opened iTunes the next day, the songs were nowhere to be found. And when I selected the Check For Purchases option in the Store drop-down menu, I got this message: "All purchases have been downloaded for this account. Purchases can only be downloaded once." Well, that sucks, because I just spent my hard-earned cash (albeit--and thankfully--only four bucks) on some music, and it disappeared from iTunes for no logical reason. Yesterday, I bought a TV show and a movie on iTunes so that I could test out a new iPod accessory. Today, the files were missing from the iTunes library. Seriously...WTF? This is just getting ridiculous. I spent $17 for the privilege of easy and fast access to those files.

After a little searching, I was able to turn up my movie and TV show. It turns out that these two items--which are the only ones I've purchased since upgrading to iTunes 7--were saved in an odd location. While all of my previous purchases were logically saved to my general iTunes Music folder, under My Music > iTunes, the most recent ones were saved in an iTunes Music folder that the program created here: My Music > iTunes > Previous iTunes Libraries. Um, OK--why? I certainly didn't specify such a thing in my preferences. At least I found my files, but the whole beauty of iTunes is that it makes media management such an easy task, and version 7 is not doing its job.

Senior editor James Kim was a witness to my pain; he hasn't experienced such woes himself (luck?), but he is also baffled that a fix to iTunes 7 isn't priority numero uno over at Apple. After all, millions of people use the software and store. Are the rest of you as irritated as I am?

I am expieriencing many problems with itunes 7 also. I had about 1500 songs, 10 movies, music videos, and many tv shows. One day they are there and the next they are all gone. I have searched around on my computer and can only find some of the songs and none of the video content. Has this every happend to anyone else? Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hey I have a mac and a pc but the same issue

First off I own both a pc and a mac. We converted our entire CD library over the course of a month into Itunes. Now with Music and Video's we're almost at the .5TB for music storage. We had it on the PC but we'd try to play something and it would say it couldn't find it. I'd then go in point it to the right directory and wa la it was there.

Switched it to our mac thinking it would never have the same problem. BAM! One day it would tell us it couldn't find the music. Files are still there.

On both systems I checked the itunes directory and it was correct. Even stranger was the itunes directory never changes but it still puts music in other places. ON BOTH COMPUTERS. Now we've purchased around 1000.00 of music from itunes because we like it's service and on random occaissions it just puts it in another folder. Anyone know what it's like to go through that many files to have to tell this program where they are? It's still better than Media Player but I don't see how this can be a Windows only experience.

Any thoughts from anyone out there?

Are some missing the point of this discussion?

I own both an Apple Ipod and a "Windows PC". I have no blinding, passionate attraction nor aversion to either (Again, I've puchased both).

To the avid Apple fans I ask; Is it your belief that the superior intellects at Apple designed iTunes ONLY for Mac users (the "5% of all computer users" another writer suggested you are)?? Really?? I laugh out loud when I read defensive remarks attacking Windows and Windows Media Player users, and the human users themselves.

Contrary to the lofty notions of some, iTunes IS NOT intended to appeal to only Mac users. Apple IS a business folks, and I'm sure Apple would like the cash of more than just 5% of online music purchasers.

iTunes 7 and Windows Media Player aren't getting along (not for me either,..I also have songs kidnapped and relocated regularly). Where the blame lies is irrelevant. Users are users and any "creators" worth their salary would design programs that don't lose, but GAIN user confidence, regardless of that user's individual experience with good (and lousy) programs.

How about a seperate (and tired) discussion about Apple vs. Microsoft and more submissions helpful to this topic here?

When iTunes 7 is sluggish, why?
When iTunes 7 acts lost and unable to play file (without the user moving his/her music files personally), why?
When songs vanish from Windows Media Player and the My Music folder, why?

People with possible answers and helpful info would be extremely welcome.

Dissapearing Files with iTunes

7.1.1

I have been using iTunes 7.1.1 for a while now and I have lost hundreds of
music files. Everytime I reopen the application, there will be at least a few
mysteries.

1. Some files show up in the library but are the files no longer exist not even
in the trash).
2. Sometimes the files dissapear from the libarary, but still exist right along
side the rest of the tracks from the same album, so I have to go and show
iTunes where they are located for every individual file!
3. Often the files just dissapear completeley.

Some of these files I backed up to DVD, but most were lost completely.
These include both legit CDs that I imported to my library, and songs
purchased from iTunes. The real bummer part is they are usually the songs I
listen to most. If there was a different software out there I would definatley
give it a shot.

Thanks to iTunes I have lost at least 10% of my 40 gigs of music over the last
couple months.

Itunes 7 Sucks

I had all kinds of issues with Itunes 7, it was skipping and pausing during the beginning of everysong, it was trying to run some scan to have zero play gap, some option I never selected. I uninstalled and reinstalled a prior version, now my library cant be read because of a previous .itl file is newer , so I scan my system and find all theses .ilt files anf delete. Finally I can play my music again.... and I reinstalled windows during this process assuming a hidden registry key might be causing the problem. So ya, maybe it works on macs, and maybe some people have had zerp problems, buts its still broken bloatwear, no questions asked.

I have the same problems too

I have iTunes by the only reason that it's bundled with Quicktime (a program that I need to watch some videos). iTunes was good but not convinced me because I prefer Windows Media Player for playing and managing my music and videos because it's faster, doesn't use much memory, in Mexico we don't have iTunes, and I don't have an iPod (those things are very rare and expensive in my country). One day, while opening iTunes, a message appeared telling me that I should update it. I followed the directions and that program got worse because the actual version is unstable, uses much resources, and many "new" features are the same features that WMP have but by another name. if the prior versions of iTunes didn't convinced me, this version neither.

You've gotta be kidding?

Have you ever used Yahoo Music services? You must be comparing iTunes 7 to previous iTunes versions. It is still so much better than anything out there. I have Yahoo Music Jukebox. Now that is an example of piece-of-****. BTW, I also have iTunes 7 and I don't have any of the problems you mention. It works! That is all I have to say. iTunes and iPod simply work! Sure beats "playsforshit" technology.

No problems

Downloaded iTunes 7 for Mac as soon as it came out. Absolutely no problems.

This has to be a Windoze problem. If not Windoze..

It has to be the user's problem.

I upgraded to iTunes 7.x on my Mac and had no problems from the
beginning. Everything just works like it should.

Too bad 95% of the world doesn't use a Mac...
