Out-of-print recordings without DRM--Egyptian Musk
I've been listening to your show and hear you guys regularly talk about
online music stores that sell music without DRM. Well, I've got a new one
for you that's pretty unique. Anthologyrecordings.com. They sell rare and
out-of-print music in the MP3 format. Basically the type of music record
collectors fiend for. So, there's no DRM, and on top of that, they
are encoded at 320Kbps! Anthology exclusively licenses the music directly
from the artists, so you won't find it on eMusic or iTunes. Perfect for
music snobs!
Have a great day!
How to pronounce FON--Nic in Madrid
Hi guys,
Nic from Madrid, Spain, here, and I'm guessing I'm one of your few Spanish
listeners.
I listen to your podcast while I work here at FON. So imagine my surprise
when you plugged the promotion I helped set up--the 10,000 La Foneras free
for Americans, and 5,000 for Canadians and U.K. residents-ýwhile I was
working on follow-up materials for that promotion. Cool moment for me.
Anyway, we're pronounced to rhyme with "lawn," "gone," or "dawn," the Wi-Fi
router is the La Fonera, and a member of our network is a Fonero, all with
the same soft "o" sound.
We're trying to solve that "Is it ethical to use your neighbor's Wi-Fi?"
issue because our La Fonera router is specifically set up so your signal is
shared. The router creates two SSIDs, one open and one locked up and secure
out of the box. Foneros who share their signals get access to the open
SSIDs for free.
Thanks for the plug, we're trying to eventually get enough FONspots placed
strategically so that all those really cool Wi-Fi devices you talk about
will work in more places than CNET offices and our homes.
TMV Analysts cited--San
My name is San. I am 14 and am a freshman in high school. Last week, I was
at one of our school's speech teams, doing an event called National Extemp,
which basically involves preparing a 7-minute speech with no notes in 30
minutes of preparation time. The speech needs to be well thought out,
informative, and full of sources. For one of my speeches, I got the topic,
DRM. Naturally, I was well versed in the topic, having listened to BOL for
the past year or so. Normally, when doing an extemp, you have to have
sources like Time Magazine or The Economist. Most speakers I
know just fudge the sources and make stuff up. Sometimes, it is apparent
they are making a source up. However, most of my sources involved TMV
analysts. Ever since, you guys have become my favorite source for anything
involving technology. Just thought you might like to know how you are
influencing people.
P.S. Is there any archive of BOL episodes from EP1 and on that I can
download. I am at the point where, to function correctly, I must be
listening to a podcast, whether it be BOL, Diggnation, or TWiT. I listen to
the exact same show multiple times a day. I think I really need some new
material. Therefore, any help given on finding the old episodes is appreciated.
Empathy with Molly over Wii--Gail-Marie
I was catching up on podcasts, and I am really curious about this whole red
Wii idea. I live in Japan and I want to buy myself a Wii for my birthday
(February 20), but my town is pretty rural, and none of the five mega
electronics stores within biking distance have even the original ones back
in stock yet, or seem to know when they will.
Of course, these stores have let me down twice previously, when I had to
camp out at them to buy the FFXI upgrade (which I still haven't been
able to install since I lost my password when I moved back here from the
States) and when DS Lites disappeared from the face of the world for
something like two months following the Final Fantasy III release.
So, like Molly, I remain sadly Wii-less. You'd think I'd be better off
siphoning directly from the source as I do, but that's questionable.
My lack of Wii-ness has led to even more weekends than usual lost to
WoW on my iBook. Oh, the iron e.
Keep up the good work, love the show(s)
YouTube's community actively filters out porn with amazing effecincy--Rob C. in Prince Albert, SK
Late one weekend when I was suffering from insomnia, I was watching videos
and I decided to check out the recent subs. A bunch of people were dumping
late-night antics that made my jaw drop. In less than 1 minute, it was user
flagged and blocked, and in less than 5 minutes, it was gone. I watched 8
of these videos disappear in less than 10 minutes total...I was impressed!
YouTube deleted
this channel, though.
Keep talkin' about that DRM--Samantha Jane from Vancouver
Molly darlin', keep talking about DRM, it ticks me off to no end. You are
totally right, and they are totally wrong.
I completely and totally understand wanting to make money from music and
movies, but giving 15-year-olds a challenge to crack some sort of code is
not the way to do it. We are moving into a new economy, and people have to
adjust their thinking to deal with it and to figure out how to make money
out of it.
You guys totally rock but you already knew that, so meh!
