Buzz Out Loud Show Notes: Bring it on down to Askville
Posted by: Veronica Belmont

Tom Merritt, Molly Wood, and Veronica Belmont

Today's Buzz
Amazon is going after Yahoo with its new answer page, called Askville. The citizens of BuzzTown wonder why people couldn't just google most of the questions we found there; after all, they're pretty basic. Maybe we just should ask the askers.

Don't give up hope. Actually BTFII was in 2015.

TODAY'S E-MAIL:
Dave from Dallas
Airport codes for Sydney and Sidney are SYD and SDY. But there are a lot of plane changes.

Super iPod jolt--Juan
One time in my friend's house I had my iPod charging, connected right to the outlet, while we were playing some tunes with loudspeakers. I left the damn thing on top of a UPS that had a metal core. When I went to skip a song I grabbed the iPod from the metal plating, and it jolted me so hard! I don't know if it had something to do with the UPS or the tiled floor or the thing being plugged to the outlet but every time I tried to grab it from the metal plating, it jolted me. By the way, I think the charger stopped working after that. Now I have to recharge my iPod through a USB port.

Tech in the classroom--Dave (the somewhat curmudgeonesque) psychologist
Now I am all for tech, hell, I podcast my lectures, put the notes online, etc. However, the proliferation of tech has a downside. It makes cheating easier, and it makes classroom disruption easier. So, here is a new section from my course syllabi this term:

CELL PHONE/COMPUTER/PDA POLICY
If you prefer to take notes with your laptop, that is fine. If I find you chatting or checking out YouTube videos or doing anything that has nothing to do with the class, you will be asked to leave (and it won't really be a request...) Your cell phone MUST be turned off in class. This is common courtesy. I do NOT want to hear a phone ring. I do NOT want to have to pick up your phone and tell the person on the other end of the call that he or she is a jerk that is interrupting my class. Do NOT wear headphones in class. I don't care how cool your iPod or Zune (like anyone has a Zune...) is. Don't do it.

Gamefly 360 shortage
I don't know which console won the holiday season, but i can tell you one thing, there were a lot of 360s sold. It also seems that a lot of people either got gamefly membership or they added the 360 to their accounts, because almost all the games in the 360 menu are now on short wait.

USA has more static than Brazil--Rodrigo
Just wanted to comment on that earbuds shocking topic. That happened to me in 2005 when I lived in New Hampshire, I had an iRiver and every time I was walking on some carpeted floor, I would have my ears shocked. But when I came back to Brazil that didn't happen to me a single time. Probably because down here I'm usually wearing less clothes...or maybe Brazil doesn't have the evil magnetic field that U.S. does :)
Bye bye, love you all ;)

Molly is right--Bob
Definitely not a squatter, in my mind. Or a troll, or a predator.
He had a company, delivered a product, and patented the ideas surrounding it. Then his business went out from beneath him. He is not someone who swooped in and bought the patent rights for the purpose of asserting them, or prosecuted the patent with no eye towards exploitation of the idea in the marketplace. He is the guy that developed the idea, developed a product, and built a company. Not a squatter. If you build the greatest snow plow truck to plow driveways, but then heated driveways become ultracheap and the bottom drops out of the snow plow business, should you then be prevented from selling your truck? I think not. Montana Molly would understand the snow analogy. :- )
Hope you guys are having a great year. I also have my eyes on one or two items for the benefit auction. He was a good man who will be sorely missed.
Cheers.

Hoverboard does exist--Guillermo
At least the plans to make one exist on the Internet. I'm pretty sure someone has constructed one. It would be interesting to see a video in action.

Amazon is great--Tom
Hi Tom, Veronica and that new girl, uhm, er, oh yes: Molly :-)
Of all the things in the world, I am shopping for a slow cooker. Of all the places in the world, it seems Amazon.co.uk sells them at a good price. Of all the 'perfect partner' items that Amazon could pick, they suggested 'Gears of War' to go with the slow cooker. This is either unbelievably prescient of Amazon as I don't have an Xbox yet, or unbelievably stupid. I prefer the former. Do you think all the stay-at-home moms who bought GoW bought a slow cooker so they could use their normal cooking time to play more games? Huh?
