Symantec announces new mobile security suites
Posted by: Robert Vamosi

Symantec beefed up its existing enterprise mobile security suite in response to dualmode (cell and wireless Internet) smart phones that have hit the market. The new suite, designed for corporations to roll out to its employees using Windows Mobile technology, includes an antivirus application; a personal firewall; an anti-SMS spam application; data encryption for both the device itself and memory cards; feature control to disable Bluetooth, wireless, and syncing when not necessary; and an optional virtual private network (VPN), version 2.6, with network access control that can be set to allow only policy-compliant devices.

In May, Symantec plans to release a consumer version, Symantec Mobile Security. The suite will include antivirus protection, a personal firewall, anti-SMS spam protection, a password manager, and data-encryption technology.

Sling Media Slingbox
The Slingbox: now even more affordable
[+] Enlarge photo
It's no surprise to anyone who's been shopping around for one, but we received confirmation today that the list price of one of our favorite gadgets, the Sling Media Slingbox, has officially been dropped to just $199. (The Slingbox had been widely advertised and sold at that price for the past several months, with online prices seen as low as $175.)

The Slingbox allows users to get their cable or satellite TV programming--or any other video device--on any Windows PC or Windows Mobile device with broadband Internet access. The Windows Mobile software costs $30 extra to download (a free demo is available), but beyond the cost you already pay for broadband access, there are no monthly fees associated with using the device. Read our hands-on review for the complete details--and to see a video of the Slingbox in action.

Asserting its presence in the international market, Nokia announced three new multimedia cell phones from its N-series smart-phone line this week. First, there's the N72, featuring an MP3 player; a 2-megapixel camera with flash; a Web browser; and an FM radio. The N72 also comes with dedicated camera and music-player buttons and will be offered in pink, as well as black. Next up is the N93, a camera phone with a capital C. It features a whopping 3.2-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, complete with a large 2.4-inch display and autofocus; plus, it even features support for uploading your photos to photo-sharing sites such as Flickr. Finally, there's the N93, a multimedia computer of a cell phone, complete with 3.2-megapixel camera with 3X optical zoom and a camcorder that captures MPEG-4 video at 30 frames per second. It even comes packaged with Adobe Premiere Elements 2 for video editing.

All three phones will debut sometime this year in international markets, though we have yet to hear word if they'll be offered in the United States.
