"Agree with Overheating Problem"
Pros: Nice look, nice screen
Cons: Overheats and shuts down
Summary: I didn't realize before I bought this computer it would have an overheating problem. I completely agree with everyone who posted this. Note that most of the previous positive ratings are from people that just bought the computer. I would have done so too before this problem.
Sure it has great features, but I think most`of us would rather have an average computer than one that shuts down and loses all your work everytime it's on for a few minutes.
In summary of what I've read here, the best ways to combat this are to 1)clean off all the dust from the vents 2) run a fan nearby. 3)what I do is put books on either side to prop it up so the vents aren't against the table. This has helped the most.
Toshiba is not yet offering any fix for this problem, and no recall. I don't know why people with this overheating problem would rate the computer as anything other than a 1 out of 10. I think reliability is the most important feature in any item this expensive.

I have surely hated carrying this hunk of junk around campus. Its heavy, there are rarely any bags to place it in. and MOST OF ALL IT OVERHEATS LIKE CRAZY. the Fans are so huge that dust will cover it up. by then, your fans wont kool anything. and then your laptop will just fry. I did the books on the side, and it helped tremendously.

especially when I'm doing some graphics heavy stuff like gaming, which is particularly frustrating since that's why i got it.

I rarely run memory intensive programs on my laptop so overheating is rarely a problem. However, I took my laptop into the shop prior to the warranty ending. I told them my problem, i.e., shut down due overheating when playing games, etc.. I came back a week later and they told me it was a hard drive issue. So they replaced it. Did it resolve the issue? For a little while. Within a couple of months the same thing began happening. For those two months I rarely had time to even use my computer, so their fix no doubt did absolutely nothing except cause me to back up my entire hard and reinstall all of my programs after they replaced it. Now the laptop is no longer under warranty. Way to go Toshiba. Thanks a lot for the bum laptop, which, by the way, cost me $1700. I can surf the internet, check my e-mail, and even watch movies. But if I try to play a memory intensive game (other than text based rpg's), it's usually not long before it shuts down on me. Like the initial poster, I raise the laptop with books or VHH cassette's and place a fan nearby. It alleviates the problem sometimes, but other times it doesn't matter.
