"Fanastic Laptop; Provides fast speed and numerous options"

    by ferno1188 on June 11, 2006

Pros: Many quick-start buttons, quick, great software, fingerprint scanner

Cons: One pixel on the screen has gone out within the first week (to be expected)

Summary: This Laptop provides flawless performance, whily including great features and options.
First off, this laptop has it all....duo centrino processor, windows media center edition 2005, double layer dvd burner, 1.83 ghz processors, and it comes with 1 gig of ram, which is upgradeable to a whopping 4 gigs.
Toshiba makes everything easy for you by including lots of pre-installed software which is very useful for keeping any computer "healthy." These include PC diagnostic tools and automatic updates from Toshiba. They also include cd/dvd burning software and many other small programs.
Security wise, Toshiba has integrated a fingerprint scanner onto the laptop, which is surprisingly very easy to use. Just scan your fingerprint 3 times to have it recognize it, and your all set. It works with no problem. (You can also use regular typed passwords on everything)
This laptop includes countless quick-start buttons on both the side of the laptop and on the mouse pad. (I'll explain how buttons can be on the mousepad later.) On the left side of the laptop there is the power button, and under that is a button that allows one touch access to the internet and the media player for windows media center.
Under that there are 3 different buttons, one for play/pause, stop, and next/previous item. These are all quick-play tools for music, movies, pics, etc.
Now for the mouse pad buttons. On the mouse pad, there is a button in the top right hand corner. When you press it, the mousepad lights up blue with 8 different buttons selected. The mousepad now turns into a one touch access system. There are 3 pre-programmed buttons (which you CAN change if you want too) which allow you to access e-mail, diagnostics, and printer options.
Under those, there are 3 other buttons which you are allowed to select what programs you would like to run. You can always change these programs at a later time.
On the right side of the touchpad, there is a volume slider.
This laptop is truly a great buy and I recommend this to anyone who wants a nice, affordable laptop. This has all the bells and whistles (and more) of a more expensive computer at an affordable price.

I personally have one myself for a couple of months, and it had all the amazing features I loved, but does it stay flawless past a year or two? I have two "shadow"spots on my screen viewed from the side by week 3, keys will squeak if a specific size of dust gets caught in them (don't try), and I have had 2 freezes when I had to restart physically (by pulling out batt + power) and was even using ccleaner, ad-aware, symantec antivirus, and mcafee enterprise 8.0.0. I only lightly used it on the usual email and occasional browsing for comparable laptops and tech + news articles, + simple streaming video (not to mention, project 64 emulator). Also, personally, I deleted all the freeware with it cuz all they did was clutter up the real desktop. they're worthless past the subscription and invite uninvited commercial ads. last three cons: screen has an unsturdy FEEL (bounces back and forth a 1/4 inch easily from slight shake) and battery life is not travel friendly unless you use bulky 12 cell batt, making it travel unfriendly, ironically. On top of that, it's fan is on the bottom left, making it uncomfortably warm if placed on an actual lap (covers fan, heat spreads) BESIDES THESE QUIPS, I DO agree that it is immensely packed with rich features that consumers will no doubt love, making it's low price outrageous. The only thing I would hesitate on is it's D-grade service rated by a worthy magazine. Then again, as long as you know what you are doing to your laptop, one can easily get around having to call them, unless it comes completely broken and unusable, which hasn't been reported once yet about this specific model. what I luv:speakers, media ctrls, remote ctrl, and graphics quality in its underproportional price. WARNING: adapter becomes hot enought to physically defrost meat (i've done it without effort). Don't worry, it'll only happen when watching a movie, performing many processes at the same time, playing games, and virus/ad scans. Basically, it's a perfect desktop replacement that is portable weight-wise, yet with no well backed service.

The one thing I'm surprised you didn't comment on is the battery life. At best, you get around 4 hours of battery life out of this machine, using the default power saving settings. 4 hours isn't bad, but ther are certainly other laptops out there whose batteries pack a much bigger punch. That being said, the sucky battery life is the only downside to this machine, I own it and it is wonderful, as long as i keep it plugged in!
