    "Granite-like construction, bright screen"

    by jlmd56 on December 6, 2005

Pros: Optical drive/2nd battery option, bluetooth

Cons: Runs warm (almost hot) on one corner.

Summary: I'm a doctor and have been looking for a convertible tablet for some time. I have an electronic medical record and needed a laptop to carry with me during the day. I considered both the Lenovo X41 and HP tc4200, however they didn't have an optical drive built in. Once I saw the Fujitsu T4020, I knew this was the one that I would buy.
I've been using it in my clinic now for about two months. I take it room to room and do about half of my charting and documentation on it(the rest, I will voice dictate in on my desk top). I use the included Microsoft One Note program to do the bulk of my notetaking.
The thing that strikes me about this computer is it's industrial level construction. The monitor area is carbon fiber and the base is magnesium. It is very solid and gives me the impression that it tolerate many years of daily use without problems. I have had the chance to compare it briefly side by side with the IBM and HP. The HP did not seem to be comparable in either construction or ease-of-use. The IBM was very light, equally well-made ( possibly better) but the screen was not very bright, even on its highest setting. I had some difficulty reading the screening.
I bought a second battery and use it in place of the modular DVD/CD-ROM drive. With WiFi/Bluetooth on, and the screen at its brightest setting, it will last about 6 hours of continuous use. I will typically have the time during the day to plug it in intermittently, and in two months, it has only run out of battery power once. This is over a 9 hour workday.
I took a trip recently and I took out the second battery and used the DVD player on the airplane. After a two-hour movie was over, there were still about one hour of battery power left.
I also have used a Verizon aircard to get broadband Internet and it has worked extremely well.
There are some things that could be improved. One is the included pen. I'm sure this is subjective, but it feels too small, slippery and light to me. I bought a Wacom pen from Cross and like it's feel much better.
Also, one corner of the computer gets quite warm. This is under the corner where the main battery/air vent/processor reside.
I opted for 1MB of RAM and the three-year on-site extended warranty. so far I have not had to call customer service, so I can't give any opinion about them. Overall, I has been very happy with it so far. I only regret that I didn't get the integrated fingerprint reader .

Hello Doctor, quick question. We provide IT services to several small doctor offices. They use a medical appllication that uses Terminal Server/Citrix for access. Any chance in your testing you have been able to use Terminal Server/Citric on your Fujitsu Life Book T4020?

    Thanks

I bit the bullet and purchased the Fujitsu after shopping quite a bit. The above comments are dead on - it's a sturdy unit, with a good screen and decent battery life. One corner gets really hot, but the rest of the unit is fine. I've haven't had one thing go wrong on this unit. I was attracted to Fujitsu due its experience with Tablet PC's, and it's paid off so far.
