"Great smudgeproof/waterproof prints instantly!"
Pros: Durabrite Ultra pigment based ink won't smudge with wet fingers or drops of water.
Cons: No USB/flash drive print support.
Summary: I had used a HP printer before this, which was about the same price point as this one, but the prints that came out of it, would smudge and smear when touched. Even after a couple days, when you'd expect it to be set, if you touch the prints with sweaty or wet hands, or drop a little water, the prints would be destroyed. And Since I was gonna be printing out my artwork on expensive paper, I wasn't gonna waste my money with Dye Based Inks.
The prints that come out of the Epson CX 8400 are instantly touchable and they won't smudge or smear with wet hands or water drops. There are 4 cartridges in this printer, so when the ink runs out, replacing them all would be kind of expensive, but you're not wasting any ink like some printers where one cartridge has all the colors.
The power cord doesn't have a power brick, which is a huge pet peeve of mine, I hate power bricks. But the position of the USB port on the printer is placed very inconveniently. I had to fidget with the thing for a couple minutes before I got the cable in.
The printer supports SD, XD, MS pro and Compact flash cards. A light turns on when you put in the card. My mac connected to the printer is also able to see the card as a mounted drive, so I don't need a separate card reader anymore. Its just SO CONVENIENT! And you could print directly from the camera too, if its pictbridge enabled. But I don't think it supports printing from a USB flash drive. Even if it did, you'd have a hard time getting it in there. Because Like I said before, even this Port is recessed and hard to reach.
The Epson scanning software works really well with photoshop. It also has full auto, home and professional modes for complete control. You can have it automatically adjust everything before you save the image, or you could bring in the untouched image into photoshop and do whatever you like. The scanning is pretty fast.
The only other problem I have is that its kinda loud when it prints. Also, the LCD is very low res, and thus not very sharp. More resolution would have helped in viewing the pictures from card and direct printing etc.
