    "Why waist your money?"

by Hook on April 19, 2005

Pros: Takes up so much system resources that you can con your wife into letting you buy a new computer!

Cons: Huge footprint on your system, Misses viruses and spyware even when updated, pretty pricey for what you get.

Summary: I work for an ISP tech support line and all the people that I have talked to with viruses run norton. At least 20 people a week call in (we are a pretty small company) that cannot get on the internet due to viruses and as soon as I mention they have a virus I always hear the same thing "but I just updated my norton?" these people can attest to a simple reboot in safe mode then over to trend micro's website for an online virus scan and all is well. I am a firm beleiver in PC-Cillin and Trend Micro don't waist your time, or money here.

Look people. If you read a little about the product before you buy it you wouldn't have so many bad things to say. NIS2005 is a large program (not a hidden fact) If your computer is old it WILL run slow if you install a large product on it. (not Symantec's falt) Now, about the idiots who are getting viruses and have Norton...I will bet money that all they do is renew every year. YOU HAVE TO UPGRADE EVERYOTHER YEAR!! antivirus2002 and earlier are not supported at all anymore and the 2003 version is not supported by tech support anymore. UPGRADE, PEOPLE, UPGRADE!

I also work as a technical consultant and have seen many trojans slip by Norton. I no longer recommend it to anyone. Trend Micro's Pc Cillin or Mcafee's Viruscan are the two I recommend now. They're much less of a resource hog and much more effective at detecting trojans and viruses.

Norton has steadily declined in quality over the years. Not only does it take a lot of resources and miss trojans, but it's installation/uninstallation routines are combersome and can cause all sorts of registry and system issues which are usually very time consuming to undo or fix.

    Thanks, CNET!
I'm a tech novice (so hold off on the flaming) and thought I was misinterpreting things with my machine until I read this review. I have a 4-year-old laptop with still about 10G of free space. The machine has been almost useless since I installed this software. Seriously, it is sooooo slow, the machine crashes often and just opening MS Office applications takes forever. That is, when they do open w/o the machine crashing. Two thirds of the time, I have trouble just opening Explorer and getting to a home page!! I've run the virus scan over and over to see if it was somethign w/the system. I had an idea it might have been this software, but then chalked it up to the machine's age. Never had any problem before installing this garbage. BTW, only run the virus scan if you have free weekend! Anyhoo, a nice new IBM T43 is on the way. Guess which software I WON'T be installing. Cheers.

Why don't you learn how to spell?
For being a tech rep you sound like you "ain't got no education". Therefore,I cannot put any credibility into your comments.

Symantec has the best software, yes it is memory intensive but unless you have a medium to high priced hardware (solid state) firewall then this is the next best thing.

yes as with any software for it to be effective it must be run correctly, updates and propper settings.

Do Not listen to hook, he should really take a few classes or buy a computer so he knows what he is talking about before posting reviews.

I like to reffer to this acronym PICNIC, Problem In Chair Not In Computer.
