"Nice looking set, picture is awful if it's not an HD signal."

by nexpos on December 3, 2005

    Pros: Design, features.

Cons: Picture quality is awful without an HD signal.

Summary: Just bought the 50 inch model last week. I must say that I am disgusted with the picture quality when viewing a DVD (even after replacing my Panasonic with a Denon 1920 and HDMI cable with upconversion to 1080) or watching regular broadcast television. I am sitting 8.5 feet from the display (which is within the recommended stats) and 90% of what I watch is grainy, unrefined, and unsharp. I played with all the video settings numerous times, as well as surfing the web for settings information. Nothing has helped. I'm calling Crutchfield next week to set up a return. I think I'll drop down to a 40 inch Samsung or Bravia XBR Sony LCD.

First let me say that I am reading through these reviews before I make my final decision to buy this beautiful piece of technology. Even after reading these uneducated reviews, I'm still more than ready to buy, which will be done by the end of the day.

I just have to say that the simple fact that you bought this TV from Crutchfield shows the ridiculous nature of your "review". I didn't even know they were still in business. Crutchfield was a great resource before the internet, and even then they were pretty much subpar. Prime example, I could buy this TV right now from a reputable company for $1,300 less than Crutchfield.

You obviously didn't do any research prior to buying, and that's where we differ. I have been doing hardcore research for about 3 months now, you probably saw it in the catalog and thought it would probably be a good idea.

I have the KDS-R60XBR1. Everyone needs to get educated about this and pass it on I don't care if you have this TV or any other HD television whethere it is projection or plasma. It is NOT expected to be a good picture with standard defintion channels. The TV is HD. HD is going to be your best picture think about it you are taking a standard change that is about 240 lines of resolution and the tv is upconverting it to 1080P. It isn't the TV it is the source which is why the picture looks bad. Your Buying an HD for High Definition not standered definition. I tell customers at best buy all the time they ask what do we need to expect from these HD's and I tell them don't expect standard and even digital from Direct TV or Dish to look even close as good as HD. It was never expected too. So please get educated and stop using the old signals as your review for any HD Tv not just this one. Yes some SD channels look a little better than others on depending on what HD TV but don't be suprised that they don't look that good period. Bottom line get Hi-Def if youcan't get it then either wait or bite the bullet that you can't get it but having sattelite avalible you should have no problem getting HD anywhere. Sorry to vent but this is insane that people expect SD to look good on HD. It will never be and was never meant to be

If you purchased the TV to watch mostly Standard Def TV, then return it, but consider the fact that eventually everything is going to goto HD.

I used to notice a somewhat grainy picture from my regular Dish Net input, but I have since switched to using component inputs and I don't notice it nearly as much.

Why spend the kind of money on this unit if you are mainly watching standard definition TV?

I had pretty grainy non HD channels until the Cable guy did some basic work under the house - seems that the signal was coming in pretty weak. Now my non HDs are excellent - I think you'd be hard pressed to find a set that pulls them in better. As for going to Bravia - check the viewing angles - i noticed a significant difference between the two. I also get great DVDs shown even on my Sony PS2 to the TV - so, like the previous comment- I'd check out additional issues first.

You need to make some adjustments on this set. Out of the box setting are not very good. I wouldn't give up on it to soon.

    avsforum has some setting.

I find SD picture after ajustments to be pretty good and HD is amazing.

Also you are sitting to close for a 50".
I find 10-11 feet to be the closest i recomend.
