"I would strongly advise against buying Dell laptops"

by ykmd on January 30, 2006

Pros: None that I can think of, unless you have too much time and money on your hands

Cons: Dell sold me a lemon, won't stand behind product

Summary: I wanted to warn other consumers against buying Dell laptops. I purchased a $1500 Inspiron less than a year ago, and also paid several hundred dollars for the so-called extended service contract and "Home care." My computer has been a lemon from day one and five days ago, stopped working completely. Despite the extended service contract, I've had to spend over 8 hours on the phone to Dell technical support (in India) over several days and at various points been told over the phone to dismantle my computer- taking out my hard drive, memory chips, CD/DVD drive, etc. despite my service contract "Home Care" and my complete lack of computer expertise. Finally, it was determined to be a motherboard defect, and I was told a technician would come repair the computer finally. Now, almost a week later, I am still waiting for the technician to contact me. I can't contact him as they won't provide a number. I can't even complain to anyone about the poor care I've received because it takes me 30 minutes of waiting to finally get through to a live person (in India)and then this person will invariably refuse to allow me to speak to a supervisor. I've told everyone I like, and even those that I dislike to stay away from Dell. Also, the funny thing is that I am a pretty reasonable person, but sound like a total raving lunatic due to the unbelievably bad experience that I've had with Dell and this computer.

I got the 710m in Jan 2006 (Toronto, Canada). In around July, some white lines appeared out of the blue on the LCD running across the screen. I knew right away it was a hardware problem with the LCD. But thinking Dell's 1 year warranty might not cover LCD problems, I didn¡¯t bother calling their client services. Couple of weeks ago I thought I'd try my luck with 1 month of warranty remaining and found out to my surprise that LCD repair/replacement IS actually covered. Dell¡¯s rep had me run a few standard tests such as CRT output to another monitor to confirm the problem really resides with the LCD. Also asked me to take a picture of the screen and email to him for better diagnosis. (These procedures are probably a part of standard procedure, they seem pretty reasonable to me). After about an hour on the phone with Dell's rep, he opened a ticket and gave me a Dell account number to pay for Purolator charges. Frankly, I was skeptical about remote product repair and expected a couple of weeks before I see my laptop again. Well, to my surprise, the laptop was picked up on Tuesday and it was returned on Thursday. The entire LCD was replaced and the brand new front cover is definitely a plus. Dell has done a good job in getting the laptop fixed and returned in 2 days. Its professional customer service reps and fast delivery had surely won my confidence to buy from them again.

This tirade has nothing to do with the 710m at all! If he wants to knock Dell's customer service levels, do it elsewhere.

Sorry but you are an IDIOT! You embelish everything and glorify the worst. Dell lover for years! I created my profile in response to your idicy! You were so lucky to get a notebook such as this. Stay off the porn and spam sites because your isssues would have never occured. Because of your 1 rating you f*%k it up for everyone else.

Nobody is on the phone for 8 hours talking about anything. Maybe if you have a hot date coming up, but then it would take you three days or so. But not to a computer company! When I read this statement, I excluded this review right away. After reading other reviews that were positive, and had meaning. I placed my order to Dell, and I couldn't be happier.

This review isn't a review but an opinion about everything but the product!

First of all, this review is taking a rip at dell as a company, not dell computers. The computer this person is writing about isn't even the computer that is up for review in this section. Not being able to distinquish between models simply discredits this review. I wish people would listen and not just listen to themselves talk!
