"Nice HDTV for the Price"
Pros: User friendly remote and menus, nice picture with the HDMI input, Excellent Price, Speaker location is nice (less bulk), more than enough inputs and outputs, HDMI input is nice
Cons: Heavy to move (as expected with CRT), Screen goes blank sometimes with the Component input when a bright light appears on screen (explosion, camera flash..etc)
Summary: After doing a lot of research I decided to go with a CRT HDTV from 30"-34". (Big upgrade from my Toshiba 20" CRT dinosaur...wedding gift ha.)
My main goal in this upgrade was to secure an HDTV with the best bang for the buck. I didn't set out with a particular model or brand in mind. After checking the reviews on Consumer Reports I observed that the Sony TV's in this 30-34" range were probably the best picture, but also the most expensive.
I shopped for about 3 months and came across this Toshiba model at H.H.Gregg. It was the previous year model and was an open box item that a customer had returned because the TV didn't fit the entertainment center. I paid $399.00 plus tax and picked it up a few days later.
This TV has a lot of nice features and for the price I couldn't turn it down. I have read about some people having problems with picture geometry and such, but I have had no problems with the picture. The only bad thing I have noticed is that the Picture will go blank for a few seconds when a large explosion or flash occurs while watching a DVD or Program through the Component hook-ups. I repeat this has only happened with the Component hook up.
This TV also doesn't have a digital tuner built in, so you will need to purchase an over the air tuner separately or get one from your cable/satellite provider. I am currently using an LG over the air reciever with a built in DVD player. The connection from the LG box to the TV is DVI to HDMI respectively. The Digital picture is good and so is the HDTV picture. Regular analog signals displayed through the TV's analog tuner are not great, but that is to be expected with most HDTV's.
Menus are intuitive and easy to use. Sometimes when the TV is displaying a bright red or orange in HDTV it looks a little fuzzy or out of focus. I don't know if this is the TV or the LG reciever box. I do really like the speaker location. It really saves a lot of bulk on the sides, and the sound is actually pretty good. I normally don't use the speakers on the TV though. I usually run my sound through a surround sound reciever.
Well, hope this helps in making your tv decisions. If you are patient and don't mind a slightly used/ scratch and dent. Then you can find a really good deal on this TV or others like it.Updated
I recently upgraded to Dish Network and the picture through the Component is very good. Still experiencing a blank screen with bright flashes and explosions.
I am very disappointed that for some reason the HDMI input has quit working. I don't know the reason yet, but I am going to have it looked at and I will keep you posted. Still a great TV for the money. We'll see if I am singing the same tune after repairs. Since the item was an open box there is no warranty in place.
