"Excellent value for the price"
Pros: slim-fit tube, looks cool, nice 1080i picture
Cons: much heavier and bulkier than LCD
Summary: I was inspired to go HD after viewing my friend's 34" Sony XBR a number of times. My upgrade was from an SD Panasonic 27" which, while a truly good tube TV, cannot be compared to this baby.
I have a Samsung 15" LCD in my kitchen and, while that too is nice enough, I believe a good tube picture is still superior to that of LCD. Plasma was not feasible due to space limitations. 30-32" was about as big as I could go.
I read reviews, I researched, I asked questions. Eventually I found myself at Best Buy, where they had ONE of these left (I had called to ask) - and it was on sale for only $580. This was your basic no-brainer for me.
A guy came out and loaded the big box into the back of my small SUV (just fit) and off I went. My wife helped me get it in the house on a frigid night and the next day a friend came over and we hauled the thing upstairs. It weighs about 115 lbs.
I spent an HD-less week with the set, beacuse I had to wait for cable company appointment that was convenient for me. Even during that week, it was apparent that I had made a serious upgrade.
When it did eventually get hooked up with HD, I can't say I was surprised with the result, but I sure was happy! If you want or prefer a tube set in this price/size range, this LG is well worth checking out. I have not had it long enough, just a few weeks, to comment on long-term quality.
Attached to the LG are a Marantz DVD player, a pretty nice Sony VCR, a 1.1 (Sharp SD-SP10) sound system - an amazing unit in itself - and of course the HD cable box. HDMI from cable to TV. Most audio connections are digital, either optical or coax, with component video for DVD-TV on the way.
The remote is large and there are a lot of ways to use it. It is possible, perhaps even necessary, to adjust the picture to get the optimal results from your own configuration. In other words, you gotta fiddle with things a bit! The manual is helpful in this regard.
The set has loads of I/O, including a convenient side panel for some connections.
So far, I am fairly well impressed.
