    "BestBuy Scam"

by timpopp on October 30, 2006

Pros: The same exact TV as Pioneer PDP5070HD

Cons: You only get an extra remote for the price.

Summary: Best Buy & Pioneer have teamed up to scam you. The PDP-5071HD model is exactly the same as the PDP-5070HD model except you get an extra remote. WOW! If you check with Bestbuy to match pricing they will tell you it a different model # So they can't match. I have found up to 1,100.00 difference in pricing. That's 1/3 the cost just for a remote which cost about 90 to replace. So don't buy a PDP-5071HD Pioneer just made this for Best Buy as quoted by there costumer service line.
    Updated
I went to a different store and still did not work. So I emailed bestbuy and they sent me there policy. Which indicated that there price match is only after you make your purchase. Only bestbuy has this model #.

I just got duped by a BestBuy on a scam which I thought I might share here... So I am in the market for a new TV. I do some research and find the set I want, a Pioneer PDP-5070HD. I have some time to kill yesterday while the brake rotors for my truck are being turned, so I stop by BestBuy to check out what they can do on this...

Now I was very specific about the exact model I wanted. They show me the TV on the floor (a PDP-5070HD) and they end up coming very close to the price available on-line. So I figure what with shipping and all... I buy the TV. When I get home I realize they have sold me a different model TV, a model PDP-5071HD. Hmmmm, what the heck?! Well maybe it is a newer, better model or something??? So I do some research and find out, no, it is actually a defeatured model. It lacks "pure" viewing mode capability. So I call up BestBuy and tell them I am none too pleased. They just got done giving me a bunch of BS about how sorry they are, but essentially, they will do nothing about it. So I am returning the TV set and forming a BestBuy hate club!

I will personally never shop there again. I caution you if you do, check out carefully what they are selling you!!!

I just bought this tv, and they gave me a 123buydirect offer after I raised Hell with them over exactly the same thing. I first dealt with the supervisor, and he rejected my 123buydirect (don't know how they have this model) offer of substantially lower than their advertised price. Today I called Long Beach headquarters, and they verified this is a special number for Best Buy. If you look, there is a one in all their Pioneer models that aren't referenced in tech support. So after calling him the second day and threatening to cancel my order, he still argued that the boxes were technically different, and said I'd have to come to the store to cancel it, I said fine. I told him he would see me later and asked for the store manager's name.
He called me back and gave me the 123buydirect price, still not as good as beachcamera.com for another 100. I may have gotten lucky as we are having a small blizzard and he said not to bother coming in, but this is crazy.

    FYI,
I wouldn't participate now that I got my deal but would imagine you could get some folks together to hit BB on a false advertising scheme.

    Regards,
    Todd

They will price match, 123BuyDirect has 5071 for $2699.00. I got mine from BestBuy last weekend for $2699.00, and loving it.

I've been passing through my local B/buy alot as I,ve been checking out there TV's and I've overheard and been confronted by pushy kid sellers who'll rip off anyone who doesn't know there stuff and won't walk away.

I went to my local Best Buy and they were very helpfull. I gave them a web site for the PDP-5070HD and they price matched it with the 5071HD. So that thing about models being not the same is false. After adding a TV stand, warrenty, new cables, installation and a couple of rebates I got it for the price of a 42" model. I saved so much money that I was able to buy more from them besides the plasma. They went out of thier way to help me make my purchase. Not only will I be doing all my shopping there but I will let all my friends and co-workers know how I feel. Timpopp's, you might want to try another Best Buy. Sounds like you got a lazy salesman which is not the norm for them. You might also bring your comments to the store manager. I am sure he would not want a saleman of that calibur working for him.
