"Only plays MP3, not wmp"
Pros: Inexpensive with rebate, good sound, takes SD cards
Cons: Only index numbers, no titles and descriptions on screen
Summary: I received this player for 5 dollars after rebate with a 128 MB SD card combination. Great deal if you can part with 50 bucks waiting for the rebate. I wouldn't pay 55 dollars for it. Very light weight, actually would feel higher quality if it was heavier but that's all perception. It is unlikely to break after a drop being so light, but I wouldn't want to step on it. The soft touch plastic case at first seems cheap but actually is durable and more scratch resistant than the painted USB players. The USB link works pretty fast; 35 songs (125 MB) in about 3 minutes. I like that you can change out SD cards up to 1 GB. I like the idea of having a few cheap 128 MB cards (about 35 songs) for different situations: one for exercising, one for rock, one for classical, etc. Much faster switching out the cards than to download files.
After a half hour of seeing "no songs" on the display after downloading 35 wpm files to two different SD cards, I discovered that it doesn't read wmp files. I checked Mach Speed FAQ online which confirms this. Get the free wmp to mp3 converter at nch.com.au/switch/ for Switch Sound File Conversion Software. It works prety fast (15 minutes for 35 songs) and once converted and downloaded to the Trio, worked just fine.
It has four EQ settings: off where the volume can get very loud and lacks the very low notes unless they are drowned out by the mids and highs; Jazz which takes away all low notes and leaves a very tinny sound (useless); Rock which takes away the high notes leaving a muddy sound; classical which seems the more balanced sound but for removing the very high notes. The volume is reduced to a less ear-damaging level when on the three EQ settings. This sound quality is through a 20 dollar headset as I don't like earbuds that much so I didn't try the included ones. I'm leaving it on classical for listening to pop tunes for now.
I'm glad I bought it. I've had good rebate experience with Mach Speed in the past.
