    "It's a must have!"

    by 208GadgetGeek on June 25, 2006

    Pros: Everything about it...

Cons: The MacBook doesen't have a backlit keyboard... Thatsit...

Summary: As a Mac user for a few years now, I must say that I'm impressed with the direction that Apple is taking with their products. The decision to blend the line that was created with the iBook/Powerbook line has been pulled off in a brilliant manner. Good job Apple.

The new product line that's offered is the MacBook/MacBook Pro line. If you're an iBook user then you will see the MacBook as a familiar machine. If you're a Powerbook user you will see the MacBook Pro as a familiar machine.
All of the machines now offer pretty much the same features. The difference is the prosessor speeds and graphics cards. The MacBook Pros get a better graphics card and slightly faster processors then the MacBooks.

All the options that are available for these machines are the usual Apple things; more ram, bigger hard drive, combo drive or super drive, etc.

The things that set this new product line apart are things like the built in iSight cameras in every machine, the keyboard and the power adapter. The camera looks really good! Nice addition. On the MacBooks, the keyboards are the most noteable change. For those of you that have Apple laptops from the iBook/Powerbook line, you know that after having those machines for a while, the keyboard being pressed up against the screen when the screen is flipped down does take a toll on the screen after a while.
Apple has sunk the keyboard area and raised the keys. The keys feel better than the keyboards on the older models. The keyboard is also a permanent thing now, you can't remove it like you could on the old iBooks. Probably a good thing???

All of the new MacBook/MacBook Pro models offer a glossy screen. Standard on the MacBooks, option on the MacBook Pros. The glossy screen looks really nice. Much brighter then the matte screen on the older models.
All the Mac laptops now have a DVI video output. Thanks Apple!

Another cool new feature is the new MagSafe power adapter. Briliant!

Sticking with the magnets... Apple got rid of the little magnetic latches that popped down once you closed the screen (the MacBook Pro still has them). The MacBook machines have magnets the hold the screen closed. The magnets are pretty strong and do a great job holding the screen closed. Another briliant addition.

Now there's a lot of talk about these machines running hot. I will tell you this... I've been using my new MacBook in the same manner as I used my 12" iBook. The iBook ran hotter then the MacBook. I've used the new MacBook sitting in my lap, I've used it sitting at a desk. The machine seems to run cooler then the iBook. I haven't burned my legs having the machine sitting in my lap for an extended amount of time. I think it's all hype folks.

You can't go wrong with these machines. It's a few new additions that make the machines better and all the familiarity that makes it as simple as pulling it out of the box and working on it just like you did on your old Mac. These are the best computers on the market. Go get one today!
