"longtime windows/pc user-i will never buy another brand of pc"

by dnmvnm on July 15, 2006

Pros: The overall build quality, the quickness, price/value-esp. compaired to competition, astheticlly pleasing, the way hardware just works with OSX, trackpad the size of Rhode Island, 2 finger scrolling

Cons: Mac OS is filled with 'conveniences' that i do not need that eat up the hd space, heat issues a concern but not a defeat, more usb ports would be nice, these are more personal whinings than real cons

Summary: In need of a laptop to replace my aging, 'bootleg' P4 3.0 8lb tank of a laptop, (bootleg as it's a badass custom job) i wanted something that was light enough that i would have to check my bag to make sure it was in there. I initially thought i wanted a Dell Inspiron 700m but i just could not part with the cash for that one... glad i didn't!
I purchased the Macbook from Tekserve, with much reserve as it had been out less than a week. (i'm an IT tech and i know better than that!), but i was traveling and using the laptop for performing live music. I needed something reletavily inexpensive and bad assed enough to handle what I was to throw at it. The initial quote the salesperson made out was for $1890. for the black macbook w/ 2.0 processor and 1Gig of ram. I told him to take that back, give me the 2.0 processor 60Gig HD and 512Megs ram in the white case which knocked it down to right @ $1400 w/ tax. I threw my old familiar friend Windoze on it as i had no time to aquaint myself with OSX, but was amazed by the beauty of the interface.
This config eventially worked FLAWLESSLY and faster than anything i had used before. I say eventually because the installation of a piece of hardware I was using for shows is painfully accurately portraied in the Apple TV commercials. I understand Bootcamp is a beta but it's still funny-
I plugged the hardware controller into the mac running OSX and it worked.

I plugged it into the mac running Windows and got a power surge on the USB hub error, then a blue screen,
driver updates caused a malfunction in the controller and erased the ********* firmware. After hours spent reinstalling firmeare & going in this circle there came a workaround that made performing live a total crap shoot, with several bluescreen reboots on stage, luckily before the shows started...

After i had a chance to sit with OSX i love it. The reliability has slowly gained my trust which is a HUGE thing for me to trust my equipment. AND i can use windows during the day for work!
I purchased 2gigs of ram from a 3rd party for $230 rather that whatever ungodly price Apple/Tekserve has on theirs, installed it myself and have not looked back.
I am officially converted and can not wait for the Core Duo 2 Mac desktops to hit.

-A client of mine has asked me to pick out a notebook for her. She knows she wants a Lenovo X60, when asked, i reccommended the macbook but she wants what she wants...the one i picked out which was about $400 more than i paid for the macbook w/ no OSX. i don't know why anyone would want something else.
