"A Great Approach"
Pros: Affordable, an optional expense, Solid backing for the format
Cons: No HDMI could be an issue if studios get overly skittish about piracy
Summary: I think the add-on approach that Microsoft took is a good one for the consumer. Games really don't need storage beyond the current DVD-9 format in this generation of system. Sony's decision to include a Blu Ray drive as standard equipment on the PS3 is a questionable one. The added cost and production problems just do not seem worth it. This will very likely be an affordable, quality product, where the expense is purely an optional one as the HD-DVD drive will only be used for movies and not game content. Lack of HDMI may be a problem, but Microsoft has considerable weight to throw around when such a decision could adversely affect its interests.

this is a next generation gaming system. the xbox and the ps2 had built in support 4 dvds. so y make it optional. it is not a good leap if they want their format 2 beat bluray. ther r a lot peepl who r willing 2 pay $500-$600 4 the ps3. everytime a ps3 is bought a bluray player is bought. lets say 4 ps3's r bought thats 4 bluray players sold, but if the same number of xbox 360s are sold than maybe 1 or 2 might by the hd-dvd add on. it takes up even more space. a lot of peepl dont no about hd-dvd and bluray. so they may never by the hd-dvd drive. with the ps3 u r putting a bluray movie inside and someone watches it they will by more and more. but ther r sum downsides 2 this. it pushes the price of the whole console itself however the hd-dvd add on plus the price of the 360 is $600 the same as the high end ps3. u can get the same thing 4 $100 less with the $500 ps3. in my opinion sony's strategy is better than microsoft's but hey thats just me.
