On the backside of the Roadmate 6230T-LM DashCam, you'll find a 120-degree wide-angle camera that watches the road ahead waiting for the integrated G-sensor to detect sudden motion or speed changes. In the event of sharp braking, rapid acceleration, excessive cornering, or sudden impact, the camera automatically captures video of the event. Because the camera is constantly recording on a continuous loop, it is also able to grab video from the moments preceding … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- While many automakers concentrate on how to connect phones to the car, Chevrolet used CES 2014 to take a different approach, essentially building smartphone-equivalent functionality into the dashboard. The new feature is called App Shop, and will be available this year in select models.
App Shop expands on the Chevy MyLink system, which already uses a touch screen and icon-based interface. Chevy gave me a demonstration of the new feature in an Impala after a press conference.
Among the familiar icons of MyLink, which cover navigation, phone, and the stereo, Chevrolet included another icon calls Apps. An owner will be able to tap the icon and browse apps that Chevrolet has approved for use in the car, choosing which to install. … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- Garmin just announced the HUD+ at CES 2014. It's a new version of its Head-Up Display, but judging by the photos and the lack of any announced new features, the only thing that appears to have changed is the price.
The HUD's hardware doesn't appear to have changed at all since I reviewed it in late 2013. Its bright green LED display still projects turn-by-turn directions, speed, lane guidance, and other relevant navigation data onto a transparent windshield film or an attached reflector lens and into the driver's line of sight.
The addition … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- BMW tends to do things its own way, which is the case with the new automated parallel parking system for the new i3. Unlike similar systems from other automakers, the driver of the i3 can keep hands off the wheel and feet off the pedals while the car parks itself.
During a demonstration at CES 2014, I sat in the driver's seat of the i3 electric car. BMW stationed a row of cars along a curb, with one relatively small space open for parallel parking. When I was ready to find a spot, I pressed a … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- The new Dash Cams aren't the only Garmin product announced at CES to feature cameras. Nestled within the updated 2014 series of Nuvi GPS navigators, the Nuvi 2798LMT debuts as the first Nuvi to feature a wireless backup camera.
The Nuvi 2798LMT starts off with a massive 7-inch screen and boasts Garmin's outstanding navigation software with features that I've enjoyed on its latest flagship navigators, including voice-activated destination entry, free lifetime traffic and maps, and Active Lane Guidance with voice prompts. It also features Garmin Real Directions, which calls out landmarks in the turn-by-turn … Read more
With the market for portable navigation devices shrinking, Garmin is constantly looking for new, clever ways onto your dashboard. Rather than tell you where to go, Garmin's latest devices, the Garmin Dash Cam 10 and 20 announced Monday at CES 2014, aim to document events and accidents along the way.
The Dash Cam affixes to the windshield with a suction cup mount and is powered by the car's 12-volt power system, automatically springing to life when the engine is started and shutting down when the car does. A wide-angle HD camera points out of the windshield at the road ahead and records a continuous loop of 1080p, 720p, or WVGA video onto its included 4GB microSD card. Up to 32GB memory cards are supported, should the user want more space to store more incidents or increase the length of the recording loop. … Read more
LAS VEGAS -- AT&T is putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to its drive to turn cars into smartphones.
The Dallas-based telecommunications company on Monday unveiled AT&T Drive, a platform that allows automakers to add connected services such as in-car entertainment systems, over-the-air diagnostic systems, and other cellular-enabled features.
In addition, AT&T will open the 5,000-square-foot Drive Studio, where automakers can bring in vehicles and test out services and components. The company told CNET that it has invested several millions of dollars on the construction of the facility.

LAS VEGAS -- My first few times driving a car with adaptive cruise control, I nervously kept my foot hovering over the brake as I approached traffic ahead. Riding in Audi's A7, fitted with a test version of its Piloted Driving feature, was like that, but more so.
As Audi's autonomous driving technology is still under development, I wasn't in the driver's seat. I watched as a brave Audi staffer pushed a button, then took his hands off the wheel. The car used its forward-looking radars and laser to "see" traffic ahead, a windshield-mounted … Read more
