Meet the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo -- a car that's unlikely to ever feel the road beneath its rubber. Like the name suggests, the car has been designed for one purpose: appearing in Polyphony Digital's PlayStation 3 exclusive, Gran Turismo 6.Although the concept car has been created for inclusion in a fictional product, Mercedes-Benz hasn't slouched on the design. Every step of the way, the manufacturer has gone out of its way to build a vehicle that could work in the real world. A 1:1 scale model of the car has even been built, debuting at the opening of the new Mercedes-Benz research and development center in California.
When young, nimble companies displace established, stalwart ones, it forces everyone to keep on their toes. Disruption has pushed the consumer tech world to insane levels of churn, but even the humble automobile is not immune. Tesla is the poster child for vehicular disruption, a new brand launching a new luxury automobile that, within a few months, was outselling popular models from Lexus, Porsche, and even BMW. Others are coming, with their own alternative cars and motorcycles, all intent on knocking the now-familiar brands from their comfortable perches.
Keenly aware of its position in the crosshairs, the Bavarian Motor Works … Read more
Garmin has announced a pair of smartphone mounting kits for Android and iPhone devices that are designed to help drivers to interact with the Navigon navigation app safely and more conveniently.
The GPS hardware manufacturer and navigation software developer has really been pushing the Navigon app with its latest forays into the smartphone accessory biz. First, there was the Garmin HUD, a retro-sweet head-up display that displayed turn-by-turn directions on your windshield, but only if you used it with the Navigon app.
Snap your Android smartphone into the Universal Smartphone Mount and, if the device supports Near Field Communication, an … Read more
Mini previously released a few details about the long-awaited update to its iconic little Cooper hatchback, but today the bulldog comes completely out of his shed. The photos Mini released look very much like the previous-generation Cooper hatchback, but the press release reveals big changes for the suspension, engine bay, and cabin electronics.
One thing Mini did not do with the new Cooper was follow the example it had set with recent model variants, all of which are bigger, and not quite as fun, as the hatchback.
The new Cooper hatchback is bigger than its predecessor, but only slightly, gaining … Read more
A car like the Scion FR-S, driven on a twisty road, makes you feel like a really skillful driver. The 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe offers no such validation. Unless you push it to extremely dangerous speeds, it will take that same road and make it feel like a walk in the park.
BMW originally built its M cars as special editions for the company's racing drivers. Since that time the M brand has become popularized to the point where you can even get an M3 Convertible. The M6, however, has the kind of performance chops that can best … Read more
SAN FRANCISCO -- The scariest thing about riding a motorcycle is the cars and trucks. To help riders deal with big, boxy, and often lethal vehicles, the Skully P1 motorcycle helmet sticks a Google Glass-style heads-up display, rear-view camera, and Bluetooth in the helmet. But isn't that tech more distracting and dangerous?
It's hard to imagine how hurtling yourself at freeway speeds down the road while dealing with what appears to be a Google Glass knockoff is a safe way to get wherever you're going. It sounds extremely cool, and ridiculously dangerous.
How can you pay attention … Read more
Hot on the tail of its announcement of the production Subaru Impreza WRX, the automaker has released shots of the 2015 Subaru Legacy Concept, which will debut alongside the 'Rex at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
According to the automaker, this concept celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Subaru Legacy and provides a look at the styling cues for future Legacy models. Taking a look at the released images, the future of the Legacy looks a lot like a toned-down variant of the Subaru WRX concept that bowed in New York earlier this year.

With refreshes to its big ol' Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups under its belt, Chevrolet turns its attention to its midsize Colorado pickup at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show next week.
According to Chevy, the all-new Chevrolet Colorado will be "engineered to be the most capable, most versatile and technologically advanced midsized truck in the market."
When the automaker calls the Colorado "all-new," it likely means just that. The pickup will have been completely redesigned since its last appearance in the American market at the end of the 2012 model year. (We should point … Read more
Most motorists know by now that texting and driving can be more dangerous than drinking and driving. And teens, who'd just as soon text as talk, are among the drivers most likely to have a texting-related accident.
The new Road Wars for iOS aims to keep drivers safe by gamifying safe driving. The app monitors your driving behavior, rewards you for safe practices, and penalizes you for speeding, swerving, and, most of all, interacting with your phone.
Created with teens in mind (but suitable for anyone), Road Wars (which appears in the App Store as RoadWars) bills itself as … Read more
Detroit may be the Motor City, but cars are a quintessential part of Los Angeles culture, often serving as status symbols among the rich and famous of this entertainment capital's sun-drenched streets. And this year's Los Angeles Auto Show will serve as a showcase for some long-awaited model updates, as well as a host of new cars and concepts.
One model I've been anticipating greatly is the new Audi A3, which will be a radically different car from the small wagon sold here previously. Two years ago, Audi revealed the new A3's cabin tech at the … Read more
