As Subaru will only offer the WRX and STI in sedan formats, the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST may well be the hottest hatchback in the land. In ST form, the little Fiesta subcompact gets 197 horsepower, a suspension affording easy apex rotation, and brakes that shave off just the right amount of speed. Down a twisty track, I reveled in the perfectly responsive steering.
The only thing I found to complain about with the Fiesta ST is that the car just isn't outrageous enough. The array of bright colors (green envy, race red, and molten orange) don't quite … Read more
Cadillac announced today that its vehicles would benefit from a built-in 4G data connection, and that an app store, called CUE Collection, would launch in its CUE (Cadillac User Experience) infotainment system later this year. The move follows similar announcements by sibling-brand Chevrolet, and builds on the OnStar telematics platform which comes standard in GM vehicles.
Last year, OnStar announced it would adopt 4G connectivity through AT&T, making for a more robust data connection in the car able to power other features besides the traditional OnStar safety and concierge services. OnStar comes standard in all Cadillac models, and … Read more
For a little while on Wednesday, it looked like we had a date for when Toyota would start offering Apple's new CarPlay smartphone integration for iOS devices.
Then early Thursday, the automaker shifted from drive to neutral, with this brief note on its official Toyota UK blog :UPDATE 13/3/14: A previous version of this article said Apple CarPlay would be in Toyota cars from 2015. This is incorrect and we are happy to put the matter straight. No announcements have been made about if and when Apple CarPlay will arrive in Toyota cars.

The Audi RS 7 Quattro is one of those cars that tries to do it all. Not content to just be good at one thing or to be a jack-of-all-trades, the RS 7 tries to be great at everything...and pulls it off. It's possibly the most "total package" car that I'll drive this year. Startlingly fast, quite comfortable, and extremely high tech, they don't come much more "CNET-style" than this.
Power and performance The most powerful of Audi's A7-chassis cars, the RS runs on a 4.0-liter V-8 engine that is … Read more
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) met today to approve a new regulation banning Tesla from selling its Model S in the state. The ban will take effect on April 1. Two other states, Arizona and Texas, enforce similar rules that prevent auto manufacturers from making direct sales to consumers.
As CNET covered in an earlier story, Tesla had been in talks with New Jersey administration officials and the NJMVC over the rule change. On Monday, the NJMVC abruptly notified Tesla that it would meet to approve the rule change at a session today, bypassing a legislative process.

If you were planning to buy a Tesla Model S in New Jersey, you might have to go to New York. On Monday, New Jersey fast-tracked a rule change that would effectively eliminate direct sales from a manufacturer such as Tesla to consumers. The new regulation was supported by an association of New Jersey auto dealers.
Tesla currently has two stores and one service center in New Jersey. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) had, up to this week, approved licenses for the stores to sell vehicles. Tesla had been in discussions with the NJMVC and members of the … Read more
Apple plans to make major improvements to the Maps app in iOS 8, a new report claimed on Tuesday.
Apple's top executives, including CEO Tim Cook and Senior Vice Presidents Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi, are currently working on Maps for iOS 8, 9to5Mac reported, citing people who claim to have knowledge of Apple's plans. The executives are focusing less on interface improvements this year and more on enhancements to the application's accuracy and reliability, the report said.
In addition, Apple has added public transit functionality to the app, ensuring that users can find directions when using … Read more
At the 2014 Geneva auto show, we got the first hands-on demonstrations of CarPlay, the feature of iOS7 that Apple announced last year as iOS in the Car. From comments on the Internet, you might think Apple software has now taken over car dashboards, leaving Android users with the choice to convert or walk.
It may seem unlikely, but many Internet commenters are wrong, at least about CarPlay. I was one of the first journalists to get a demonstration of the system at the show, and I was impressed.

Some auto shows fizzle, hitting a dead zone in product cycles so that manufacturers have little of note to announce. This year in Geneva, the opposite happened, with automakers from every segment showing off exciting new models and concepts.
There were supercars and hypercars. There were compact SUVs and hot hybrids. There were cars of the past and of the future. And Apple joined a couple of automakers to give the first public look at CarPlay, formerly known as iOS in the Car.
The show stealers were the exotics, vehicles that sell in limited quantities at prices ranging from a … Read more
