When Apple releases new iPhones and iPads, it typically keeps around a previous generous product. In the case of the recent iPhone launch, while Apple retired the iPhone 5 in favor of the 5C, the iPhone 4S stuck around in an 8GB version that's billed as a "free" iPhone with a two-year contract. That seems reasonable enough, though it's a shame you only get a measly 8GB of storage space (Apple previously didn't make an iPhone 4S in an 8GB version).
The Air completely replaces last year's fourth-generation iPad, its most relevant new features being the faster A7 processor, a new iPad Mini-inspired design, and coming in at a light 1 pound.
Clearly, the second-generation Mini got more elbow grease out of the two. It receives a higher-resolution Retina Display, which ups the pixel density by quite a bit. It also benefits from Apple undercutting the original Mini with the … Read more
Apple, you've got yourself some cojones.
I mean, when the iPad Mini first debuted a year ago (almost to the day), most observers were surprised by the rather steep $329 starting price -- especially considering the much cheaper small-tablet alternatives from the likes of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Google.
But, hey, people seemed to like the form factor. The only thing missing was a Retina Display, which everyone expected in the iPad Mini 2. And, sure enough, the new iPad Mini with Retina Display has ... well, it's right there in the name. Starting price: $399.

When buyers pick up their new, thinner iPad Air or Retina Display iPad Mini in November, Apple will also be ready with accessories to protect them. At today's iPad event in San Francisco, Apple announced new leather Smart Cases for its freshly announced tablet products.
The new covers offer all-around coverage for the tablets, combining the rear and edge protection of the iPhone 5S' new case with the screen protection of a Smart Cover.
Like the new iPhone's case, these Smart Cases will be made of dyed leather on the outside that is available in six colors: brown, … Read more
Apple reminded everyone who's on top with the redesigned and appropriately renamed iPad Air.
Unlike last year, where the star of the show was the brand new iPad Mini, Apple went back to the 9.7-inch device that created the mainstream market for tablets. The $499 iPad Air offers a tablet that is 20 percent thinner and 29 percent lighter, while offering up a smaller bezel for an overall sleeker, slimmer design.
"It's the biggest step yet in delivering the vision that is iPad," Philip Schiller, head of marketing for Apple, said during the launch event. … Read more
The iPad Air and Mini got Apple's A7 chip.
That's essentially the same chip as the one in the iPhone 5S. It's a 64-bit processor and uses the M7 motion coprocessor.
Apple's Phil Schiller said the 9.7-inch iPad Air is 72 times faster than the original iPad in graphics processor unit (GPU) performance.
It's also 7.5mm thick, 20 percent thinner than the 9.4mm iPad 4. But, again, the same silicon is used in the much-smaller iPhone 5S, so Apple presumably doesn't have a problem integrating the A7 it into the thinner … Read more
During a San Francisco press conference today, Apple took the wraps off its newest iPad Air tablet. Sporting a more powerful 64-bit A7 processor, narrower bezels, and a thinner 0.29-inch profile, the iOS 7 device features incremental upgrades from its previous iteration, and retains the familiar aesthetics consumers have come to expect.
And while it's obvious that this iPad is an improvement on the last, Apple isn't the only company out there making top-notch tablets.
From different mobile OSes to various display sizes, users can now choose from a bevvy of tablet alternatives. To see how the … Read more
Almost one year to the day that Apple unveiled its first small iPad, the company launched its successor, the iPad Mini with Retina Display. The much-anticipated device sports expanded LTE support, in addition to a better-looking screen.
Apple wasn't the only company to release new tiny tablets this year. In 2013, Google and Amazon refreshed their lineups with the Nexus 7 (2013 edition) and the Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch. Now that Apple has taken the wraps off the iPad Mini 2 at its October 22 event, we can see how each tablet stacks up against the other.

After months of rumors and leaked parts photos, Apple's new iPads finally made their official debut -- but once again Apple didn't bring many surprises to its latest launch event.
Yes, we got a new trimmed-down 9.7-inch iPad Air) along with the much-anticipated iPad Mini with a Retina Display and some Mac upgrades. But that left plenty of other product refreshes and announcements in a "to be determined" state.(the

Apple's iPad Mini finally has a Retina Display just like its bigger brother.
The new version of the 7.9-inch tablet will offer buyers a 2,048x1,536 resolution, the same as that found on the new iPad Air and a hefty bump from the original Mini's 1,024x768 resolution, Apple revealed Tuesday at its iPad launch event.
The new resolution packs in 326 pixels per inch, compared with 163 ppi on the first Mini model. Also found on the last few iPhones, the last two 9.7-inch iPads, and the MacBook Pro, Apple's Retina Display is … Read more
