When Audible.com rolled out its iPhone app earlier this year, the big complaint was that you couldn't browse the Audible store or buy audiobooks on the fly. You could access your existing library of purchases, but for new stuff, you had to stop by your PC.
Not anymore. Audible 1.3 provides access to a new mobile store, where you can browse and search Audible's catalog of more than 85,000 audiobooks. See something you like? Buy it or add it to your wish list on the spot.
(To actually download books, however, you need to be … Read more
For those of you who have a Sonos system and an iPad, there's good news: the Sonos Controller for iPad is now available in the App Store as a free download.
Sonos has offered an iPhone app for a while but has been hard at work on the iPad version for several months. Needless to say, the new iPad Sonos Controller--at least from a graphical perspective--delivers a richer Sonos experience. The larger display allows you to view more album information, and overall we really liked the interface. However, controlling your system via a smaller, truly handheld device like the … Read more

Of all the culture shocks to my system during my 1999 semester abroad in Moscow, the one I remember best was the toilet. On the surface, it looked normal, like any American toilet I've ever had the pleasure of spending quality time on. But upon opening the lid, I was faced with a high ledge at the back designed to catch solid waste; only after the flush--and my, what a large flush--could I pretend the stuff had never existed.
My host family told me it was a brilliant design, one that enabled us all to more closely inspect the … Read more
The jailbreaking attempts on iOS 4 devices continues as one of the major players, the dev-team, posts a video of a new iPod Touch running a beta version of the latest exploit in iOS 4 called SHAtter.
After the jailbreakme.com exploit was closed by Apple via iOS security update, the dev-team, along with several other hackers, have been hard at work, looking for the next way to break Apple's mobile operating system to allow customized software and apps on iOS devices.
Lots of people buy iPads under the mistaken assumption that they can scribble notes on them, much like they would on a legal pad.
However, because the tablet employs a capacative touch screen, you can't just grab your old plastic PalmPilot stylus and start writing. You need a special pen, one with a conductive tip that mimics your fingertip.
Many moons ago I wrote about the Pogo Sketch and Pogo Stylus, both of which work well enough but feel thin and lightweight. If you're looking for something a little more substantial, a little more business-class, check out the … Read more

There are many differentiating factors between an iPad and a Netbook, but none so obvious and useful as a physical keyboard.
We've remarked several times since owning the iPad that the addition of a dedicated Bluetooth keyboard really helps the little slate become a pretty good mobile writing tool. Though a virtual onscreen keyboard does the job fairly well, especially in conjunction with a raised case like Apple's own microfiber one, it's no substitute for the rapid-fire feel of physical keys. I use an Apple Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad, and it's a great combo; the only problem is, even with its small size, carrying yet another gadget around ruins the appeal of the iPad's simplicity.
We've wondered why Bluetooth keyboard cases weren't immediately conceived for the iPad from day one, but six months later we've finally got one that's real. The Kensington KeyFolio is a leather-bound booklike case that bonds a thin silicon-covered Bluetooth keyboard to its inner lid, unfolding to turn an iPad into a veritable mini-workstation. For $99, the KeyFolio is cheaper than the sum total of most keyboards and cases on the market. Is it worth the investment? And more importantly, could a keyboard case turn an iPad into a valid Netbook replacement?… Read more
Apple has released a new update for iWork on iPad that adds support for saving documents to MobileMe iDisk as well as the option to export documents in more native Microsoft Office formats.
With Apple pushing to sell the iPad as more than just a consumption tool, these important updates to the flagship productivity suite on the touch-screen tablet indicate that Apple is serious about achieving its goal.
The 1.2 update for iWork gives Keynote and Numbers the capability to export to comparable native Microsoft Office formats for PowerPoint and Excel. Pages previously supported exporting to Word formatted documents.… Read more
