If you regularly download apps for your smartphone or tablet, you have definitely experienced it: that moment when you find out the game you downloaded for free suddenly isn't. Welcome to the world of Freemium, where your initial download is only to get you interested, but where the real money is spent once you're already hooked on the game.Freemium explained The word freemium is a portmanteau of the words free and premium, implying you're getting a premium experience without paying a premium price. For users, it seems like the best of all worlds to get an … Read more
Anyone who picks up last year's iPad Mini at your nearest RadioShack will get a $100 gift card in return.
Available now, the offer applies only to the 16GB Wi-Fi iPad Mini, which sells for $300. You can grab the gift card at any RadioShack store but not online.
How long will the deal last? A RadioShack spokesman told CNET that the end date will depend on how inventory holds up. But he promised the offer would be good at least throughout this week and the coming weekend.
At $300, last year's 16GB iPad Mini is only $100 … Read more
The iPad Mini with Retina Display may look a lot like the original iPad Mini, but it's a tad thicker and has a second microphone on the back that none of the leaked specs revealed. The result of those small design differences is that many of the existing iPad Mini cases don't fit the Retina version, and case makers have had to scramble to make new, slightly modified versions of their existing cases. It's taken them a little while to do that, so in the early going we're seeing fewer case options for the Mini Retina … Read more
You don't need a keyboard for your iPad. But, if you're planning on an iPad being a laptop-replacing device, having one can come in very handy for getting writing done. I've played with a lot of keyboard accessories on the iPad, but these are my favorites.
Before the iPad Air, most cases would fit the second-, third-, and fourth-gen models equally. That's no longer the case. So, having used several new solutions and written on each, I've broken my recommendations down into categories of iPad: Air, previous generations, and iPad Mini.

While a holiday price war is breaking out among laptops, Apple is staying comfortably above the fray with its iPad Air, according to Deutsche Bank.
About 60 percent of the 80 best-selling laptops at retailers that Deutsche Bank recently monitored cost less than $400, while 30 percent are below $300.
Deutsche Bank did a "series of online checks" that included Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart over cyber Monday.
"We believe this reflects the need for [laptop] vendors to close the pricing gap with tablets which continue to exhibit strong market momentum," analyst Chris Whitmore said … Read more
For years, various computer games and mobile apps have attempted to capture the essence of constructing Rube Goldberg-style puzzles -- complex contraptions designed to perform simple tasks. The Incredible Machine was perhaps the most famous, and the similar Crazy Machines debuted for iOS more than four years ago.
Now comes an "official" game approved by the Rube Goldberg estate: Unity Games' Rube Works: The Official Rube Goldberg Invention Game. It's available now for iOS and soon for Android.
Never heard of Rube Goldberg? Here's arguably the best-ever real-world example of one of his puzzles.

Google Voice Search, part of the Google Search app for Android and iOS, can now respond to many queries in French, German, and Japanese in the language that they were originally asked.
Google did not immediately respond to questions about what languages are planned next, or why these three languages were chosen. However, given how many people speak Hindi, Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese, it would stand to reason that they would be high on Google'… Read more
With the arrival of iOS 7, iPhone and iPad users received a smattering of Instagram-style visual-effect filters for snapping photos. But they can't be used when shooting video.
Enter Spotliter Video, a free app that provides a choice of distinctive filters for video recording. It is, quite simply, like Instagram for video, though without the integrated sharing options.
It works like this: fire up the app, then tap to choose an effect from the scrolling selector along the bottom. Spotliter offers a dozen of them, but not just the usual assortment of sepia, black-and-white, and so on.
Rather, you … Read more
A talented artist can get a lot of mileage out of the various art apps available for the iPad, but we ain't never seen anything like this. Digital artist Kyle Lambert has created a portrait of actor Morgan Freeman that's so lifelike we wouldn't have believed he'd painted it at all -- never mind on an iPad.
Luckily, he shot a time-lapse of the process so we can see exactly how it was done. About 200 hours and 285,000 brushstrokes have been condensed down to just three minutes so that you can see, stroke by stroke, how the picture was put together. … Read more
