Two-week warning, folks. That's how long you've got left until the fat man sings. (Chanukah-celebrators have even less time.) If you're still shopping for stocking stuffers, secret-Santa gifts, fifth-night-of-Chanukah trinkets, or whatever, look no further: I've got five guaranteed-to-please gift ideas:Buy.com has four HP-branded 4GB USB drives for $29.99 shipped (after a $10 mail-in rebate). That works out to about $7.50 per drive. Knock out four stockings with one purchase! My (new) thinking regarding Netbooks: They have their place in the world, but if you're going to spend more than $300 on one, you might as well spend $400 and get a full-fledged notebook. Anyone who agrees should check out Dell's Inspiron Mini 9, currently on sale for $299 shipped.
Available in Obsidian Black or Alpine White (other color choices are available, but add to the cost), the Mini 9 runs Ubuntu Linux and comes with 512MB of RAM, a 4GB solid-state hard drive, and an 8.9-inch LED display.
Dell gives you a host of configuration options, … Read more

As a mostly ecstatic new iPhone owner, I've spent considerable time checking out--you guessed it--the hundreds of freebie apps available from iTunes. Here's a list of seven I'm loving right now. (Note: all links are for iTunes.)AroundMe Instantly find nearby banks, gas stations, coffee shops, and other businesses and services. Dashbuster Manage your Blockbuster or Netflix queue anytime, anywhere. Great for those times when a friend recommends a movie and you think, "Yeah, I gotta rent that." The Navigon 5100 GPS features real-time traffic updates, and you don't have to pay a subscription charge for it: The service is included free for the life of the GPS. The last time I featured this model, it was $130. Now, eCost has the Navigon 5100 (refurbished) for $99.99 (plus shipping, and after a $10 mail-in rebate, which just about even each other out). That is one seriously suh-weet deal on a GPS.
In addition to the traffic service, which will advise you of trouble spots and suggest alternate routes, the Navigon offers text-to-speech capabilities (it pronounces actual … Read more
As regular readers know, I've seen sweet deals on wireless inkjets and lasers and on Ethernet-equipped multifunction printers. But I've never seen such a great price on a wireless MFP.
Built for smallish offices, the Brother MFC-490CW prints, scans, copies, and faxes, all in color. It features an unusually large (3.3-inch) wide-screen LCD, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity, a media-card reader, and … Read more
After a weak and disappointing Black Friday as far as deals go, we've arrived at Cyber Monday, when stores pony up their online-only deals.
And guess what? The pickins? They're not so slim. Here's a list of some decidedly worthwhile bargains:Newegg has the Jawbone 2 Bluetooth headset for $79.99, plus 4 bucks or so for shipping. That's at least $20 less than I've seen it elsewhere. Best Buy has an Insignia Internet-connected GPS for $199.99 shipped. A built-in cellular modem lets you tap Google local search and other nifty features. One … Read more
Wow, what a colossal disappointment this Black Friday has been. I've spent the better part of the morning looking for eye-popping, never-before-seen, gotta-have-it deals, and you know what I've come up with (besides a sentence ending with a preposition)?
This: Amazon has a 16GB iPod Touch (1st-generation) for $199.99 shipped. Whoop-de-do. I mean, that's pretty good, but I just couldn't muster much excitement for anything else. There's Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Edition for $59.99 (Xbox 360 or Wii). Yeah, OK, not bad. But everything else? Meh.
Now, if you were crazy enough to pitch … Read more
Sorry to do monitors two days in a row, but I couldn't let this one slide: Staples has an SVA 2200W 22-inch LCD monitor, with DVI and speakers, for $139.99 shipped (plus sales tax in most states). That kinda kicks yesterday's deal's butt, huh? Sorry about that.
The 2200W hits mostly high notes, spec-wise, including 1680-by-1050 resolution, 5ms response time, DVI and VGA inputs, and stereo speakers. However, it's not HDCP compliant, so don't plan on using it with your Blu-ray-equipped PC.
My bigger concern is this: Who the heck is SVA? I never … Read more
Hey, remember the 22-inch Optiquest monitor from earlier this week? It was $149.99 after a $20 mail-in rebate. Well, now you can get a comparable monitor for the same price with no rebate. Buy.com has the AOC 2216Sw widescreen LCD for $149.99. Shipping is free.
Like the Optiquest, the AOC is actually a 21.6-inch monitor (big deal). Also like the Optiquest, it has only a VGA input--no DVI or HDMI. That's a letdown, but not a deal-breaker. Indeed, if you check the 35 user reviews on the product page, you'll see that most buyers … Read more
