The Santa Clara, Calif., company unveiled two new 64-bit Atom processors and an LTE-Advanced chip during a press conference at Mobile World Congress. It also announced multiyear agreements with Lenovo, Asus, and Foxconn to develop mobile devices that run on Intel chips. Lenovo and Asus have partnered closely with Intel in PCs, and both also have introduced tablets with Intel chips inside. Lenovo introduced a smartphone with … Read more
With a large-screen iPhone 6 possibly showing up this year, Digitimes Research provides some insight into where and when Apple rumors likely originate.
In an article posted Friday titled Explaining the Chaiwan Model for the Mobile Supply Chain, Digitimes Research talked about, among other things, timing.
"We may provide shipment data for Apple 1-2 months before [the product] even begins selling in the market, because that is when the supply chain delivers it to Apple," Digitimes Research said.
That may explain the crush of relatively reliable rumors that typically hit about a month before the product appears.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich responded to questions about Apple, building his own PCs, and future tech at Intel in a Reddit AMA on Wednesday.
On Apple: "We've always had a very close relationship with Apple, and it continues to grow closer. Sure [it's] grown close over the years especially since...they started to use our technology in their systems."
Along these lines -- though Krzanich didn't address it -- market researcher IC Insights posted a research note earlier in the month suggesting that Intel should cut a deal with Apple for its idle Fab 42 … Read more
SAN FRANCISCO -- Intel is upping the ante for crunching big data, promising to double the performance over the previous generation with the new Xeon E7 v2 chipset.
The Xeon processor E7 8800/4800/2800 v2 product family is designed to support up to 32-socket servers with configurations of up to 15 processing cores and up to 1.5 terabytes of memory per socket.
Unveiled at the Exploratorium museum during a media presentation on Tuesday, the chipset falls within Intel's game plan for tackling the Internet of Things movement, which the processor maker projected will grow to consist of … Read more
The graphics chipmaker unveiled its updated GeForce GTX 750i and GeForce GTX 750 graphics processing units (GPUs), which are aimed at the midrange graphics market. The chips are 50 percent faster than their predecessor -- Kepler -- and twice as energy efficient, thanks to the inclusion of Maxwell. The graphics chips are the first time the architecture has hit the market.
The low power consumption of the chips means users don't need special power connectors for them. They also run quietly, which … Read more
Apple may be getting closer to production of its A8 processor as news from Asia points to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) as the main supplier.
That report jibes with a source who CNET spoke to December. That person, who is familiar with TSMC's plans, said that Taiwanese contract chip manufacturer had already begun making Apple's A series processors. To date, Samsung has been the sole manufacturer of Apple's processors.
But TechNews takes this a step further, claiming that TSMC … Read more
The Santa Clara, Calif., graphics chipmaker on Wednesday posted fiscal fourth-quarter revenue and earnings that were better than analysts had expected. Nvidia also projected revenue of about $1.05 billion in the current period, higher than the $1 billion Wall Street anticipates.
A big reason for its better-than-anticipated results was strong sales of high-end graphics processors to PC gamers.
"Quarterly revenue came in well above our outlook, driven by PC gaming, capping an outstanding year for our GPU business," CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said in a press release.
Huang told CNET that … Read more
The dual-operating system idea is just the latest attempt by the computer makers to juice sales, which have been on a steady decline: shipments posted their worst-ever drop last year, and on Thursday, Sony said it would exit the PC market. In the newest effort by the industry to revitalize computer sales, PCs would let users access both Android apps and Windows software with just … Read more
In a surprise move, Nvidia has contributed software that will help Linux take advantage of the graphics horsepower of the company's new Tegra K1 mobile chip -- and Linux project leader Linus Torvalds is happy about the reversal of fortunes.
"This time I'm raising a thumb for Nvidia. Good times," Torvalds said Sunday night on Google+, a strong contrast to a June 2012 speech in which Torvalds instead offered Nvidia a middle finger for its non-cooperation. Nvidia has preferred to offer proprietary binary drivers to let operating systems use its graphics chips, not open-source software that … Read more
Advanced Micro Devices is trying to make an impression with its first ARM processor.
And it may succeed. The AMD Opteron A1100 series -- targeted at servers -- can integrate 8 processor cores and will be one of the first ARM chips to be 64-bit.
AMD is tapping the Cortex-A57 processor design, the "highest performing processor," according to ARM.
Sample shipments of the silicon will begin this quarter along with a development platform, AMD said Tuesday.
The chip supplier is highlighting the 64-bit aspect of the processor.
"AMD is collaborating with industry leaders to enable a...64-bit … Read more
