Get an Epson Home Cinema 6100 1080p projector for $699

Today's deal is a little weird. Awesome, but weird.

Fry's has the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 6100 1080p projector for $699, plus $10.44 for shipping. It's new, not refurbished, making this the best deal I can recall seeing for a 1080p projector.

What's the weird part? The Fry's site says it's "available for preorder," so there's no way to know when you'll actually get it. Hmmm.

Update: It now shows in stock!

Well, nothing ventured, nothing gained cheaply, right? Having just reviewed a similar projector priced at $1,500, … Read more

1080p shootout: iPhone 4S vs. Canon 5D Mark II

The iPhone 4 already offered standout image quality for a mobile phone, helping to further the general trend of using a phone camera rather than a dedicated camera. And with ever-better video, phone cameras will increasingly will be able to supplant videocameras, too.

Apple clearly hopes to stay ahead of the curve with the iPhone 4S: one of its selling points is a new 8-megapixel camera sensor that can record high-definition video at full 1080p resolution. It seems likely that it will outshoot most of its direct competition in the mobile phone market, but it's natural to wonder how well it stacks up against a high-end camera, too. … Read more

Get a Toshiba HD camcorder for $129.96

Much as I'm a fan of little pocket camcorders like the now-discontinued Flip and the Kodak Playsport series (most notably the new Zx5), there are times when I want a full-size, full-featured camera I can grip.

Like this one: TigerDirect has the Toshiba Camileo H30 1080p camcorder for $129.96, plus around $4 for shipping. (Wal-Mart has it for $135.54 with free site-to-store shipping, but you're on the hook for sales tax.)

As you can tell from the photo, the H30 is no pocket cam (though it's still fairly compact). But that extra size brings a … Read more

Get an Optoma 1080p projector for $649.99

I love projectors. Nothing beats wall-size movies, TV shows, Xbox games, photo slideshows, and so on. I've also been known to haul a projector outside for a little backyard theater action.

These days, a 1080p model is all but essential. Alas, most of them sell for $1,000 or more--sometimes way more. But today only, and while supplies last, Woot Sellout has the refurbished Optoma HD20 and HD180 projectors for $649.99 (plus $5 for shipping).

The two models are virtually identical, though the HD20 has a slightly higher contrast ratio: 4,000:1 to the HD180's 3,… Read more

BenQ markets new affordable HD projectors to 'high-rise' dwellers

BenQ has started shipping two new HD DLP "cinema" projectors, the W1100 and W1200, that it says are ideal for "high-rise" dwellers. We're not exactly sure what makes them ideal for multidwelling (MDU) media rooms, but the projectors, which cost $1,199 and $1,499 respectively, do offer 1,080p resolution, a 12-lens optical system, and built-in dual 10-W speakers with SRS Wow HD sound technology.

The W1100 is a 2,000-lumens (brightness) projector with a 4,500:1 contrast ratio and a full 10-bit color processor. Meanwhile, the step-up W1200 is a 1,800-lumens … Read more
