Lokibit's free VSEncryptor is a capable, flexible, and easy-to-use file and text encryption tool that stands out from similar free (and pay) encryption tools by virtue of its extensive menu of encryption algorithms: 21 in all, from the familiar 128, 193, and 256-bit AES symmetric-key algorithms to lesser-known methods like SEED, SHACAL-2, and XTEA. You can designate a default algorithm and deselect unneeded ones and add VSEncryptor to Windows context menus to streamline VSEncryptor's operations, too. VSEncryptor is not only available in specific downloads for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, but also portable versions, too. We tried VSEncryptor Portable (… Read more
A Qualcomm executive has been given a new role after making critical comments about Apple's 64-bit A7 chip.
"Anand Chandrasekher, is moving to a new role leading our exploration of certain enterprise related initiatives...Anand will continue to report to Steve Mollenkopf, COO and President of Qualcomm. This will be effective immediately," according to a statement Qualcomm sent to CNET.
And he no longer appears on the Qualcomm leadership page.
Chandrasekher said earlier this month that Apple's 64-bit A7 chip is a "gimmick".
"I know there's a lot of noise because Apple … Read more
Polyglot 3000 answers the question, "What language is that, anyway?" It can identify more than 400 different languages in a wide range of characters (including Unicode fonts) from text. That's this free tool's only job, but it's an important one. It's not only free but also small: At 2.7MB, you probably have snapshots larger than Polyglot 3000. We tried the 64-bit version of Polyglot in Windows 7. Polyglot 3000's standard (32-bit) edition runs in Windows 95 to 8.
Polyglot 3000 (x64) Automatic Language Recognizer's user interface is small and easy to … Read more
Tigzy's RogueKiller scans your PC for malicious processes and kills them on command so you can root them out. Although it deletes malicious Startup files, RogueKiller doesn't clean your system. Instead, it recommends Malwarebytes' AntiMalware freeware for the task. We agree. RogueKiller also packs tools to fix Host, Proxy, and DNS issues, as well as a Shortcuts cleaner. We tried RogueKiller 64+ for 64-bit Windows.
Quit all running processes before opening RogueKiller. The program's interface is fairly plain but nicely rendered. Tabs display and sort scan results for Processes, Registry, Hosts, Proxy, DNS, Driver, Files, MBR, and … Read more
Two Wall Street analysts over the last 24 hours have been offering their take on the rumored iPad Mini Retina, including availability and size as well as more thoughts on Apple's new 64-bit architecture.
Late Tuesday in a note to investors, RBC Capital Markets Amit Daryanani said he will be closely monitoring the Mini Retina for availability due to "production constraints." Daryanani had this to say about the Mini that may (or may not, depending on the analyst) be introduced at Apple's October 22 event, along with the iPad 5:
iPad Mini: The new iPad Mini … Read more
Intel CEO Brian Krzanich touted the merits of Intel's manufacturing process compared with that of Apple's new 64-bit A7 chip today after the company's earnings report.
During Intel's third-quarter earnings conference call on Tuesday, an analyst questioned Intel about the advantages of going to a 14-nanometer manufacturing process, compared with Apple's 28-nanometer A7 chip.
"[Apple] has been able to show very impressive benchmarks on 28-nanometer silicon," the analyst stated.
Generally, the smaller the chip geometries, the more advanced the chip manufacturing process and thus the faster and/or more power efficient the chip … Read more
Easy, useful, and cool, if possible, describes how we like our desktop enhancements, and OneLoupe covers all three bases. Nenad Hrg's free desktop magnifier comes in separate versions for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows; we tried the 64-bit version in Windows 7, but it's ready for Windows 8.1.
OneLoupe is portable freeware, so we extracted the zipped program file and dragged it to the desktop for easy access (our choice). Since it's portable and a mere 81KB in size, OneLoupe runs from practically anywhere, including USB drives. Clicking the extracted file opens the magnifier, a rectangular bar … Read more
My Family Tree's attractive user interface and drag-and-drop capability make it easy to create and update your personal family tree. You can attach photos, videos, sound clips, and more to individual records, including your own narratives. The latest release, v3.0.5, adds support for KMZ files in reports and generally-improved performance. My Family Tree is freeware with separate downloads for 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP to 8. We tried the 64-bit version … Read more
Here's food for thought: Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth believes that Apple intends to merge the Mac and iPhone.
"Apple was sending what we think is a very clear signal that it will converge the iPhone and the MacBook Air," Shuttleworth said in an interview with UK-based PC Pro, published Friday.
The creator of the Ubuntu operating system expanded on what he believes Apple was thinking when it announced the 64-bit A7 processor:
People are saying yes, mobile processors are catching up with the desktop. When Apple announced the iPhone 5s, it called the processor "desktop-class," … Read more
Is Apple's A7 chip twice as fast at processing and graphics, as Apple promised when announcing the new iPhone 5S? At least for Ben Weiss, the answer is yes -- but his app is unusually well suited to take advantage of the new processor's features.
The app in question is Iter9's new Frax app for generating lavishly detailed fractal imagery by running mathematics calculations on both the CPU and GPU. It gets a major speed boost on the iPhone 5S, Weiss said, evident in faster rendering times for the swirling psychedelic images laboriously calculated one pixel at … Read more
